A fantastic player who was sadly a victim of clueless Hopkin post January. I'd have him back in a flash but unfortunately wages make that impossible.

Wages, the fact that City are in League 2 and then also BowyerS didn’t play him so presumably prefers a team without it him. But mostly wages eh?

Even if wages weren't an issue he wouldn't be staying for the simple reason that it's crystal clear Bowyer doesn't want him.

A decent player on his day but can't see him playing above league 1 level. Never impressed me like Bradley Dack did when he was in league 1 and thats what you have to inspire to be if you want a gig in the championship. Could well be one of those players that flatters to deceive and spends the rest of his career bouncing from club to club, showing glimpses of what he can do but never enough to make a club a permanent home. Wish the lad luck though.

I'm guessing if he was that influential he would have never gone out on loan to league 1 clubs. He's technically a decent player but i just don't see a championship club taking a punt on him. There again Hanson moved to Sheffield Utd so even fantastic managers like Chris Wilder can do things we don't expect.

Completely agree with this. The truly stand out players in past seasons such as Dack and Billy Sharp never really went missing in the same way as Payne did. He's also not actually that young - at 24 unless he has a sharp upturn I think league one will be his level.

Yep, and I'm guessing that is the player Bowyer saw on the training pitches.

He’s not championship standard as he’s been released by a championship club. To be championship you need to do it on a consistent basis. Most players on their day are able to do something amazing. What differentiates players are those who can do it regularly.

To small for Bowyers liking, He tends to favour brawn over craft at this level

I think last season epitomised why he's never nailed down a regular spot at championship level. The natural talent is there but he lacks consistency. He also lacks pace, which is a big factor in the higher leagues - what's his position? He's not mobile enough to play on the left. He cant play central midfield in a 2, so he'd have to play as the most advanced of a midfield 3, or as a number 10. And for those roles, if you're lacking in mobility you need to be very good consistently to justify your selection. He isn't.

Different levels in terms of quality but there are similarities as to why the likes of Juan Mata has never made it properly at Man United, despite having bags of natural talent.

I may be wrong, but I don't think he'll shine in the championship.

Bang on. I used Dack as an example because i'd expect Payne to be gaining interest at this time in his career from clubs looking to be building a team around a game dominating number 10. Doesn't do enough to warrant it though. More chance of a team taking a punt on Lewis O'Brien because he can fit into a midfield 2 or 3.

Excellent summary, talent a plenty, but I was not impressed in the latter part of the season, he most certainly did not keep going.

Add to that L O'B's better defensive work rate, and yes ...... Lewis certainly has a career ahead of him.

I like a bit of flair in the team. Leigh Palin for example was such a talent, some didnt like his laid back demeanour, but for me, as long as you have somebody like Micky Kennedy alongside you, like Palin did, it should work

Martin Singleton was another good example, complimenting tough work horses such as McCall and Abbott

Leigh Palin ......... now you're talkin' !! (Although I still favour Ronnie Brown above all, myself :D)
There's always room for midfield flair when you have players such as Kennedy, Abbot, McCall, Pepper etc around you.

Probably about an 750% differential in wages is the main aspect Don, no doubt we need to get some craft from somewhere for next seasons team but not on £10k a week salary

My Dad was a huge Leeds fan, and constantly droned on about a certain Duncan McKenzie. I opposed with "So what ? City have Ronnie Brown."
We both watched the TV highlights of Arsenal beating City 2 - 0 in the FA Cup. Yet it was Ronnie, who ran the midfield that day, and not Alan Ball. My dad humbly muttered something like - "Yes, not a poor player, is he ?", lol.
