Looks like a very together dressing room. Not the kind under Adams where blame was laid at players feet and scapegoated by the "you'll not get a better manager than me" man.

Thats a bit OTT for a League Cup Rd One win. That said, I have a feeling the Cookie Monster will be up there with the L2 top scorers this season.

Look at Town's twitter. They lost 4-1 and are pushing this angle.

He spent most of his pitch time yesterday tracking back and covering. His close control won us a free kick in an attacking position when he had three defenders around him and could easily have coughed up possession. He got a shot away from a tight position that was clearly handled and everyone but the ref could see should have been a penalty. He played his part in successfully managing the game to a winning conclusion.
Having said that, I do feel his best position now is as a back to goal hold/link up man, which he did superbly at the end of last season. But if Sparky is going to continue with only one up front then, after that performance from Cook, Angol is clearly second or third in the pecking order for that role just now.

Don't think that was OTT for one minute, we all felt the relief that we weren't continuing to be as bad as our first two league games...

Due to all substitutions, and Platt was down for a few minutes.

An intriguing player is East - very slight build and looks about 14 years old, but Hughes obviously sees something in him. He needs to bulk up a bit for me to become a proper League 2 midfielder, but let’s see…. early days!

Behave. I've just said I think he's now behind Cook, and probably Oliver, for the central striker role. I think he's going to struggle for game time this season. Probably be used mostly as a sub.

Agreed, we go into the next game on the back of a win, rather than a soul destroying 96th min defeat.

I think the ref was Seb Stockbridge. My abiding memory of him is when we played Port Vale a few years ago, someone had a shot and it hit McArdle on the back, and he gave a penalty for it. Awful decision! (Never forgiven him!!)

Yet he didn't give a pen last night for a player who's arm was clearly away from his body. Same old same old.

My first time seeing the new team in person last night.

Thought at first Hull were very good - you could tell they are two leagues above, excellent passing and movement. When they scored, I think it was deserved on the balance of play at that point. Neither keepers had had too much to do, but they were the better side.

However, once we got the first goal it seemed to give us more belief. Great cross and header for the first, and the second seemed like a training ground move that came off!

Second half showed us as the better of the two sides I think but there wasn’t an awful lot in the way of goal mouth action - their keeper didn’t have much to do, but equally neither did Lewis.

Lewis looks like a very good keeper and an upgrade on ROD, Bass, and Hornby.

Halliday played well I thought and should be an excellent right back for us. Dare I say hopefully the best one since Darby?

Ridehalgh was steady and had a good game at LB.

Thought Platt and Crichlow looked good and quite like the look of them as a centre half pairing. I was quite concerned about their age and experience, but I think they’ll both grow into it and be more confident as they get used to each other in the next few weeks.

Gilly - still not sure what to make of his new role, but he didn’t play badly.

Banks - excellent debut. Promising signs that he will be a very effective player for us.

Chapman - was disappointed in him at times, thought he lacked ideas and belief in himself, but obviously got the assist for the 2nd goal.

Cook was excellent - a proper number 9 performance!

Probably missed a couple of players, but been typing a long time now. All in all an enjoyable night’s football.

I think that's fair summary but I come back to my original point. In a lacklustre performance, a defence sitting in, is Angol the answer? Has the key to unlock defences and knit it together up top? I'm not so sure

I know it's an old anecdote of mine but I compare Lee Angol (4 goals, 2 assists, 26 app) at Leyton Orient vs Josh Wright (8 goals, 4 assist, 34 apps) . Only 3 seasons ago, with little knowledge of the dynamics at Orient but the latter got double the amount of assists and goals than the former. The numbers throughout his career just don't stack up.

Angol has struggled with injuries throughout. Part of the aim this season will be to get 30-35 games out of him.
