don't take our word for it, here is a government inquiry on the matter.

https://committees.parliament.uk/publications/9580/documents/162177/default/#:~:text=In August 2021, the number, those working in the sector.

    Causes of labour shortages
    8. While we recognised difficulties in disentangling the precise effects of different reasons for the labour shortages, our evidence was clear that the two main causes were: the covid-19 pandemic and Brexit.

    12. The evidence we have received leaves us in no doubt that labour shortages, caused by Brexit and accentuated by the pandemic, have badly affected businesses across the food and farming sector. If not resolved swiftly, they threaten to shrink the sector permanently with a chain reaction of wage rises and price increases reducing competitiveness, leading to food production being exported abroad and increased imports. We are also extremely concerned about the impact this is having on the wellbeing and mental health of people working in the sector.

Most labour in these industries is incredibly casualised bronco, I'm middle management and I'm on a ZHC ffs. Would you work for a company but to all intents and purposes be self employed? People from these countries are willing to do that because the standard of living where they are is bad compared to us. My polish buddy I used to work in the sandwich factory told me he would live like a king back home on the what were considered meagre poverty wages we were on at the time. It's desperation not superior work ethic.

It wouldn't pay well enough to live away from home with all the expense that comes with that. I'm sure some people do it but it's not ideal is it?

you could yes but only for 3 months. otherwise you need to prove that you are actively looking for work and have a reasonable chance of gaining employment.

    https://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=457&langId=en

    EU citizens are entitled to:

    • look for a job in another EU country
    • work there without needing a work permit
    • reside there for that purpose
    • stay there even after employment has finished
    • enjoy equal treatment with nationals in access to employment, working conditions and all other social and tax advantages
Jobseekers cannot be expelled if they prove that they are continuing to seek employment and have a genuine chance of finding a job.
    https://www.bmi.bund.de/EN/topics/migration/law-on-foreigners/freedom-of-movement/freedom-of-movement-node.html

All this because papers wanted to sell and because successive governments wanted to cover up their own incompetence. The shame.

It's not ideal but again it should not be accepted not working and drawing benefits is acceptable.
We're getting away from the original post if EU workers are happy to work in seasonal jobs then this government need to make it happen and get the relevant visas sorted.

I was on benefits for a time (jobseekers allowance) personally didn't even have one of those jobs offered to me (no car at the time) now I am doing quite well for myself actually.

and the vast majority of benefits claimants are already in work! last one, the biggest benefit spend by country mile - which is over half of our spend is actually on pensions.

Really and who is going to police this and define trying to find work, we can't control our own population that don't find work acceptable abnd do jobs on the side whilst claiming benefits.

I don’t really want to perpetuate this topic in the football thread but do an honest list of pros and cons of Brexit and there is only one conclusion

home office/border control? that's their specific job :joy:

you know most "illegal" migrants actually just come here on a holiday visa and just overstay their visa right? papers don't report that though I wonder why...

Why are we discussing illegals the debate is with regards EU citizens having free movement within the EU.
These home office border controls that were very much a part of cut backs and austerity under this present government.

because the point was "who would police them" when in actuality non EU migrants can easily do what you suggest. I.E EU was never the problem in the first place. The government was.

either way the notion of EU migrants (or any migrant) coming here to just only claim benefits is just a falsehood spouted off by governments and papers. Our benefit spend has not decreased since we have left the EU.

How's that when they were perfectly entitled to come to the UK as EU citizens maybe the farmer telling lies.
I'm sat in a hotel whilst replinging where there are many young Polish workers, why should we prohibit others who are more that happy to come and work because it seasonal.

I've never been an advicate of ZHW but unfortunatly thats a way of life for some in the modern working inviroment and IMO why working people need to be union members.

These situations shouldn't be happening for the reason that farmer stated its not a lack if EU worker not wanting to come but because the government haven't got their act together with with regards visas.

And Liz Truss wants to cut civil service jobs even further. Which magic wand is going to speed up visa processing?
