Last night was 451, but league games have been 4312 or a 442 diamond. Both are the same thing essentially

Oldham are in a mess and I tipped them for relegation in pre-season. Their owner is a Moroccan football agent who allegedly decides which players they sign, their French manager has no experience managing in England, let alone League Two and also a chunk of their squad have very little experience playing English lower league football. All bad omens for them.

From what I can gather their defense is a bit dodgy, particularly without Wheater, but they have some competent and pacey forwards.

Sadly I can't see us signing anyone before Saturday so I imagine our midfield will remain weak and disjointed. I reckon it will be 1-1. I can't see Oldham's defense keeping out Vaughan and Donaldson for 90 minutes and I can't see our midfield providing sufficient protection to our defense so I reckon one of their forwards will run at us and smash it past the keeper.

I suggested this the other day but it didn't go down well. I agree with you that it couldn't be any worse than Akpan or Anderson. O'Connor has played in that position before and until we get someone better in, I think he might be our best option.

Agree that's not a bad shout. It won't be popular as most dislike the sulky armband shirker.

Sure he played in midfield one last year and was okay. AO'C doing that defensive role may free up the rest up get forward a bit more effectively.

No midfield combo can be as bad as oil tanker, headless chicken, invisible man threesome from last night!

I dislike him intensely myself and wanted him to be the first out of the door this summer but it didn't happen, he's still here and if Paudie's fit and going to be partnering BRE in defence, I think O'Connor is worth a go in midfield. He can't be any worse than Akpan or Anderson and short of any new arrivals, we've got to try something different with what we've got.

Seems to me we play with such a narrow set up, that it is more like 4-1-2-1-2?

More width is needed. Teams can simply go round our midfield and if they beat one full back, then crosses have been our nightmare for far too long.

I think it may well be a case of who scores first, goes onto win on Saturday.

When was the last time that we have even got a point, when we have conceded?

I would agree with that with Longridge (who showed signs last night) at left back over Hanley. Scannell right and Wood (our had our best opportunities last night) on the left.
Gibson and Palmer in the centre is better than any other permutation in the midfield as it stands. At least there's a bit of momentum about it. I expect us to show intent and win this game.

They have their very own version of Rahic in charge. How many claims of unfair dismissal do they have/had? Though most of these relate to withdrawals of notice, but a worrying trend.

Didn't Pete Wild, when nailed on for the job, leave without a job and then takeover Halifax?

You say that but in the opening two games there were very few clear cut chances creates from players getting out wide (around our midfield as you put it) and getting crosses into the box. To be honest I don’t think the current 433/4312 setup is too bad from a defensive point of view, I think we’ve looked pretty solid (ignoring the cup game given the team we fielded). The issue is we don’t seem to have mastered how to pose any sort of attacking threat playing this system.

4 4 2 is coming. Oldham will get a roasting. Life will be rosey again. Bowyer will be a hero and we will have nothing to write about.

Hope so, but I fear another 433 on Saturday, he is talking in the T&A about the firepower up front with three strikers!!

Sounds like Paudie and scannell could start based on the press conference. Also GB seems really excited by McCartan

He can pick all the firepower he wants, still buggered if there’s no one to supply the ammo

    AOC in midfield?

    What?

The guy who passed the ball to the Preston player for a free goal?

The guy who is so slow on the ball he makes Hanson look like Messi?

Arguably the worst suggestion of the season, sorry.

He's good in the air, can tackle, and can get good air time on a captains armband and that's literally it.

    NO THANK YOU.

It’s a measure of the high regard fans hold for Akpan and Anderson :)
