We have had to cancel 3 holidays- Borneo in late March, Lake Victoria and Chobe in June and Italy next month.
We hope to spend a long weekend in Yorkshire at the end of September but no overseas plans until next year, crossing our fingers that there may be a vaccine by then

Currently on the east coast. Was always planned (daughter wedding - cancelled until next year and sons 21st - curtailed) and really enjoying it. Was planning on a couple of trips abroad including Poland but tbh I'm not bothering now.

Not so much the worry of Covid but the possibility of quarantine, cancellation and local restrictions. Its not something I perceive as part of a holiday so quite happy to pass for now and see how things pan out moving forward.

The article deals with that. They'd have to change over to British drivers this side of the channel.

Imports would be much easier to manage. The drivers can isolate themselves if they need to go abroad and they would be easier to track and test but you could also have it so Continental drivers would bring them to a designated drop off, most likely in Calais and then the British drivers would drive off the Ferry or Chunnel pick it up and turn right around. You could also actually get the airlines involved seeing as they won't be taking passengers. Turn them into freight airlines, the planes crew would fly out filled with any exports. When they land the crew are taken directly to a Hotel where they are isolated in the way F1 is doing with the teams. next morning picked up, the planes full with imports. They land at a UK airport, truckers are waiting to pick it up and take it to the UK destinations.

Obviously wouldn't totally cover all the trucker or airline revenues but better than having free travel for everyone and then having that cause another full lockdown

So what would you do let a 3k holiday go to waste ? Flight is still going , apartment is still open , shops and bars are open .

Was this one that was already pre-booked or were you one of the ones who decided to say 'Sod this I'm booking a holiday' as soon as restrictions were lifted?

If you booked after then sadly I would say its your own fault. You took a risk and now you either have to decide to throw away a £3k holiday and hope that either you can get a refund or insurance will cover some or all of it OR you have to accept that you will be unable to work for 2 weeks and maybe even lose your job for it. Its upto you. You can't have your cake and eat it through, you decided that a foreign holiday during a pandemic was the most important thing in life and you have to take the consequences for the good of everyone else

And if before why didn't you take the refund offered by travel firms when restrictions were first put in place? It has been pretty clear from day 1 of the lockdown that things weren't getting back to normal before 2021 because its going to either need a vaccine or herd immunity to allow things to go back anywhere close to normal. So again you took a risk by not getting a refund when you could and again you have to now make a choice of whats more important going abroad or not having to be in isolation for 14 days when you get back

I’m booked for Spain - just flights
    6th-18th Aug.
2 weeks ago we decided to write it off and go to the in-laws in Dorset instead.
Since quarantine was announced, I’ve tried to get something back on the flight. Unfortunately, it’s Ryanair, who aren’t giving any ground. I know my flight is only 50% full, not even considering no-shows. They’re definitely happy to fly and sod the customer.
Personally, won’t be using them again - sure many others won’t as well.

Cancelled my booked holiday to Italy just before balance was due. My family didnt want to take the risk of travelling abroad and put up with crowded plane and gambling on what restrictions are in place once there, not to mention possible quarantine period on return

I was going to transfer the holiday to same place next summer with Jet2. Wentthrough the whole procedure with them changing the holiday. At the end of the call the Jet2 agent said I need £160 amendment fee, which I refused out of principal. Now trying to get my deposit back, but doubt I will be successful.

Might go to the Lakes for a few days now instead, although Mrs Idle is a bit nervous about staying in a hotel, so we shall see

They were earlier in the lockdown though. They tried persuading people to hold on for this very reason but they were generally honoring cancellations

Do you live in Bradford Met or any of the other areas affected by yesterday's announcement? If so, then you'll be breaking the law travelling to stay with relatives outside of the area, unless you are already in a support bubble.
You can stay in a house on your own - eg a rented property - but you can't visit another household except in public spaces.

They weren't going out and offering them, you had to request a cancellation and as Karl said they are dragging their feet on giving actual refunds (preferring to just give credit for a future trip)

If you paid by credit card you could always speak to them and see what they can offer if Ryanair refuse a refund

If you request a cancellation with Ryanair you lose your money . There do every thing in there power not to give you your money back . I no because I’ve been threw it . If the flight is going so is your money on it , no matter if you booked on your credit card or not. For that reason I’ll be sipping a nice cold peroni looking over the amalfi coast next week

Yes now you are losing your money, you weren’t before. And actually your credit card if you cancelled it will often issue a chargeback under situations like this (and actually just threatening Ryanair with a charge back might get Ryanair to budge seeing as they will lose the money and then get hit with a chargeback fee)

And if you want to go then that’s fine, but you have to accept that you might need to go into a 14 day isolation. If you decide that risk is worth less than the price of the holiday then that’s fine

Thats where travel firms will do themselves no favours in all of this. 160 quid is scandalous when times are hard. If it cost way 25 quid to amend it then more would keep their money tied into jet2 for example. Doesn’t make sense

Until a few weeks before or flights are cancelled they will not pay out until 1 of these things happen you are still classed as able to fly . I'm booked on a holiday to Thailand in November but have still had to keep paying or I would lose the holiday if it wasn't paid in full by the due date. Until then I can't do a thing. At that is from the travel agents I've booked with who my wife spoke to 2 weeks ago.
