You could be right , who knows. I’d prefer to take my lead from Sharp and Clough , not how he was played by different managers at Gills if I were honest. This below is maybe worth a read …What I said re wages , deals offered by Gills , outbidding Mansfield is close to being spot on.

Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags, 14 Jan 2023:

“George Lapslie has been confirmed at Gillingham. We had an offer for Oli [Hawkins] and George [from Gillingham], which the club felt was a good offer bearing in mind that they both had five months left on their contracts.”

“Oli is 31 in April [and] they offered him a fantastic package for two and a half years.

“George Lapslie turned down two improved [contract] offers that we’ve made [him] in the last two weeks, so we accepted the offer for him and he agreed down there.”

    --------------------

Gillingham joint deal for Mansfield Town stars too good to turn down
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Tues 17 Jan 2023

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough said he could not stand in the way of the huge offers that big-spending strugglers Gillingham made to buy his key players George Lapslie and Oli Hawkins this week.

The Gills are throwing money at an EFL survival bid and, even though the pair were in contract until the summer, Stags let them go for a combined deal that could net over £100,000 and then quickly moved to bring in three quality players.

“We made George Lapslie a couple of what we thought were very good contract offers that his representative turned down,” said Clough.

“Then we received this joint offer from Gillingham for Oli Hawkins and George Lapslie which I believe will rise to six figures if Gillingham stay in the league.

Funny old game this football lark.

It does work both ways as well though.
When he signed we immediately had “always liked him” which unless he has a worldy (he didn’t) can only be based on a small handful games over 4 or 5 seasons, most of which we beat the teams he was playing for.
I like my football but unless a player has an absolute worldy (which Lapslie hasn’t) then he’s just another opposition player that’s forgotten as soon as the final whistle goes.
We immediately have “great signing” without seeing him in our formation but the nay sayers are immediately shot down with “wait until we see him in our formation”

I think some of our previous dodgy signings will always create a bit of doubt and negativity and therefore we also can’t expect all fans to yank themselves stupid with every signing.

I agree entirely with wait and see (I wrote Sarcevic off but he’s playing well at the moment) but this also applies to the “great signing” without seeing him play for us brigade as well.

You are. Happy clapping crap doesn’t make you positive, it makes you a defeatist. You criticise anyone who actually wants better for the club because you think you’re a super fan for putting up with garbage. Settling for the playoffs is ridiculous considering we are 3 points off second.

So they didn't want to get rid in the end? I know they transfer listed him at the end of past season but maybe he performed a bit better. Like you say, hard to know, but it will be a very bad look for the recruitment team if he is exactly what he's made out to be - and for whatever reason we're expecting something different.

For me, it's all about how we fit him into our plans because he seems like a specialist. Let's not bring him in to do a job he can't do.

Yes no matter what has happened in the past with signings give them a blxxdy chance before criticisin. This lad has had a decent career. He seems to have stalled a bit at Gillingham but let’s see if he can rediscover his earlier form

Definitely not a super fan! I'll leave that accolade to the fans who go to every game up and down the country. I am a so called happy clapper though and proud!
Refused to take part in that ridiculous protest that did absolutely nothing.

Like I've said in the past, we've spent a couple of years at the top but 90% of the time I've supported city we've been around where we are now regardless who the owner is. I'm not an entitled fan who thinks we have some god given right tobe in a higher league because we are massive.

Role on Barrow tomorrow, really hope we win so it'll be quiet on here as it always is when we're doing well.

    Up the chickens

GA will have him as all rounder no matter what. He likes his square pegs in round holes.

Patto I can understand as he's the more attacking midfielder.

Not sure I like the idea of him covering Sarc though.

No play offs. He played in 47 home and away fixtures because at the time of his transfer (from Mansfield to Gillingham) Gillingham had played a game less than Mansfield so, as an 'ever present' that season, he managed to play in all 47 League Two matches he was eligible to play in. He managed to play against us in three of those League Two matches that season, picking up a yellow card in all 3 matches.

Our record of making good signings is apparent for all to see. We get about 1 in 10 right? I too want all players to do well but sadly we buy shite and that transfers onto the pitch. Hence why we have spent so long in this league. Or do you have another reason why we are where we are?

You appear to be happy with all signings. Do you ever change your mind once you have actually seen them play and think crikey another flop or do you just clap harder hoping they transform into a proper footballer?

I clap harder and if they're really struggling I bring giphy.gif along some clappers to make sure they hear me.

Oh and " I want to work hard for the team".

I would love to hear the REAL reason they signed.

Parker: So, you’ve signed for City. What was the main reason you decided to move?

Lapslie: Honestly? It was all about the money. I don’t need to sugarcoat it. I’ve been in this game long enough to know that the offers don’t always come around like this. This deal was too good to pass up. More money, more perks, a bigger signing bonus—everything I wanted, really. Why would I stay where I was when I could make so much more?

Parker: But surely there were other factors? Passion for the game, a new challenge… that sort of thing?

Lapslie: Look, I’ve had the passion, the challenges, the whole career. But right now, I’m not out here playing for some idealistic dream. I’m playing for myself. I’m at the peak of my career, and I’m not going to pass on a payday like this. I’ve earned it, and now it’s time to reap the rewards. Passion? Sure, that comes with the job, but let’s be real—this move was about me getting what I deserve.

Parker: So, it was really just a financial decision?

Lapslie: Yeah, it was. Why wouldn’t it be? It’s my career, my life, and I’m making the most of it. If people want to call it selfish, fine. But at the end of the day, I’m here for me, and I’m not apologizing for that.

    Is he injury prone?

I get the feeling he might have been in and out of the team under Harris for tactical reasons? Haven't looked into that side of it so could be wrong.

I thought I’d read it before , and found it again. The buying club were chucking money around like nobody’s business after the American chap purchased the club and even Mansfield couldn’t compete according to that article. It’s a fallacy that Clough wanted rid especially with there rest of the season to play out when they were up there challenging .

You are right , where will he fit? Either he will sit in the pool of forward thinking midfield players Pattison, Sarcevic , Walker ( if he doesn’t move on ) and Bobby… Or he will play just behind Cookie in the Kavanagh role.

My guess as I suggested before Xmas, Walker will leave and Lapslie is his replacement ?

    A decent conundrum for once?

What qualities, characteristics does he have that make you happy with him?

I would like someone to compete with Smallwood in the middle of the pitch - tackle, pass - he isn't that. And someone to contribute with goals or assists at the top of the pitch - his stats suggest he's no better than what we have.

So, that's the basis for me believing it's not a good signing. What makes you think it's a good signing?

He certainly isn’t a defensive midfielder for sure… centre of a foward thinking midfield on the press , just behind Cook, maybe? All his goals on y/T look to be of that vein. Who does he replace ?Mmmmmm?
