Its not pathetic at all. Its quite a common thing for managers to do.
Do you just sit there on your hands in complete silence at a game then? Refusing to try and support/encourage the players cos that's all the managers job.

Of COURSE the fans can attempt to "whip up the team".... generally that's why they are there.

I don’t think we’d have played the tactic today if we had Ismail, McCarten and akpan fit.

It’s a big square peg round holes and yes Bowyer probably didn’t help himself today but still got players he doesn’t want in positions we need to strengthen. Bit limited.

0-0 at home first game is not the end of the world. Hope it’s woke some up who thought we would walk this league. It’s a real slog and not easy. Be in the top 7 come February time and we’ve got a real chance.

I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with being narrow and playing two target men up top, but you need a lot more going on around you. You need someone in the 'Doyle' position who can both link the play with quick passing and, probably more importantly, dribble with it.

Doyle grafted his nuts off but just didn't look adept at linking the play quickly, and certainly not at running with the ball. Then, without any joy coming from the flanks either (Mellor the only person representing a wing threat), they ended up punting it high and long at the two forwards, which, by the second half, Cambridge sussed.

He's got two decent forwards there but the rest of the side looks more suited for a traditional 4-4-2 with Scannell in there. Are there any left-wingers in the squad?

Fordy, I sometimes find your posts and constant criticisms amusing but tonight you are just being a dick - the vast majority of post (inc yours) throughout the summer have been upbeat and grateful we are getting our club back. We are by no means the finished article, there are existing players we all agree still have a lot to prove and we need more quality - but we have moved a considerable way for the better since as recently as last April.
First game of the season (and its a draw) and we get pap like this from you, for gods sake get behind the club and stop condemning the manager as shi$e. You are always purely driven by results on the day - there is hope and promise if we win but if not we are crap, the manager is crap etc. This was again highlighted by you gleefully pointing out your love child of last season Josh Wright scored today, does this really mean he is the answer? You are not alone as others have, after the match, stated GB is clueless and doesnt know what he is doing but again if you check their other postings over the summer they talk of new optimism. We are not great if we win and crap if we lose, that is just an emotional response to the result and performance on any given day. We are a club that is fighting hard to get its identity back, to connect with its fans again and it is making progress but there is a long way to go. GB will know as well as anyone if after say 12 games performances and results do not show this progress then questions will more appropriately be asked but to be doing this on the first day of the new season is bloody ludicrous.
Sorry for the rant (have had a couple of beers) but 'all pulling together' has to be a bit more permanent than some of the negative reaction on here this evening

It's a worrying mind set creeping in from people like @Fordy117@Fordy117, it genuinely reminds of the mind set of our local neighbours.

Who is judging him on 1 game though? I’m not agreeing with Fordy, but he has made it clear that his opinion is based on more than today.

    ADVERT

Apply <here> if you want to join the Happy Clapper’s Club......!

Played a team that will be in the bottom6, at home, and played for 30mins against 10 men. Their keeper had nack all to do. Yep, plenty to be happy about....!

Didn’t most on here want Paul Hurst as manager on here?

How did his promotion chasing side get on today at home?

    Oh yeah....

I'm all for giving people time and everyone who criticises those (like me) who are having a go after one game are completely justified. But I have to ask, as others have, if GB thinks Doyle can play as a no. 10, a position, as far as I know, he's never played before, then you have to wonder if our manager really is up to it. On another point he also said today that he was happy with the effort and commitment his side showed. Didn't look like that to me nor to several people in the kop whose comments were along the lines that certain players didn't seem to give a toss. Remember that this time last year lots of people were praising the wonderful win at Shrewsbury masterminded by Collins and Rahic.

I hate this whole effort debate. It’s absolutely misjudged in England.

Fans seem to think that charging around and flying into tackles is showing effort. Crunching into 50/50’s. It’s not. It’s nice to see but the fact we didn’t let in a goal or gave up very little by way of a Chance is enough to show me there was effort and application.

I think we need to tweak the attack and that will happen next weekend. I’ve no doubt about it. A tweak and defend and play like we did today we will win games.

Anyone would think we lost 2 or 3 nil

There was no passion there, mate. No urgency, no real desire to drive through and get the goal that would have won the game. The fans can feel it when it's there and they respond. There was nothing on the pitch there today. Nobody seemed that unhappy with a draw. But I bloody was.

Gibsons not really a wide player, he seems more at home more central and looks to want to pass rather than run with the ball, which is all well and good but Palmer already has that role and what we needed was a player wide left that could stretch the defence. As @Yorkie@Yorkie alluded to Cambridge quickly sussed out we had no threat from wide positions.

It’s clear for most of us that the squad still needs a lot of work. Bowyer himself keeps pointing out (said it again tonight), that he’s signed 10 but still hasn’t signed half of the squad he has.

That said, he is to blame too. He gave contracts to Colville (assume he’s signed seen as he was on the bench today), Devine and Anderson. If money is tight, why waste it on those 3. Most of us can see that they aren’t good enough. We’ve got to hope he’s given some money to bring in another 2-3 players in the next couple of weeks.

But I think what p1ssed me off more than anything today was Bowyer’s reluctance to change his tactics. It was clear we were too narrow and Cambridge were finding it too easy. They then went down to 10 men and took off a striker. Our response was to take off the injured Anderson and replace him with Devine. WTAF...!

Cambridge actually looked the better team for 15mins after those changes. We waited until the 76th minute to revert to 4-4-2, with Scannell coming on to replace Doyle. We looked a little better and we should have made the change much sooner. But the final bonkers Bowyer decision was to replace his ‘makeshift’ left back with the natural left back with 10mins to go, when we should have been throwing the sink at it.

I saw no lack of effort from any of the players today. They all put in 100% effort, some of their play was not good, but that is not lack of effort. Decision making needs to improve, and especially Gibson, sometimes you have to try and make the risky pass, rather than the easy pass backwards or sideways.

In my mind three extra candidates for MOM, Vaughan, Palmer, Everton-Richards and Mellor.
