Similarly, I went to my first ever City game 2 weeks before and sat in the stand. I was 7 but remember it clearly. The red wooden seats stand out as a real memory.

I have no doubt I’d have been there on 11th May too, but alas my Dad was working (police officer working shifts) so we didn’t go. He obviously ended up at the ground though during his shift in the course of his duties.

Fate is a funny thing idle I always brought my young son to matches in those days and we always stood behind the dugouts in front of the stand I am never late for matches but this day we were late and was in a queue behind the stand when an old guy approached me and said he had to go home for some reason and asked if we would like to have seats in the stand but my son wanted to meet up with his friend so we were lucky unlike so many

The last line is spot on.

For decades City fans have been quite insular in the way the disaster has been remembered. It was a topic no one dared speak about and as we saw with the Diadora advert early 2000s that included footage, the subject is still very raw and sensitive. Understandably so, of course.

I suspect some of our younger fans look at how Hillsborough is remembered and think, 30+ years on, City should remember our disaster more openly. I don’t think they are trying to rub anyone’s face in it, as what happened that day is a big part of the club’s identity.

I am not saying I agree with hoodies and chants, with survivors still haunted by what they saw. But I do think the ‘56’ was started with good intentions - to make sure an important part of our history is never forgotten. BT did an excellent (respectful) documentary on it and there has been more press coverage, so it is a natural follow on from that.

Thoughts tonight are with those still effected to this day and who lost love ones.

    My late som
My eldest son Andrew, sadly no longer with us was mascot that day after he'd done his duties we had the choice of where we could watch the match from, thankfully we decided to go stand where we normally did on the kop, "there for the grace of God" . Incidentally the 11thof May is my second sons birthday.

I was there yesterday. It was great to see so many people turn out for the memorial service. To add to the 56 minute clapping, yes I dislike it too but its not as bad as the "always remember the 56" chant that was used in previous years. I have never hated a chant more than that one

I was there that day as a 15yo with my dad. We always went on the kop adjacent the stand. Horrendous experience with many flashbacks and we weren't in the stand. It took my dad three years to attend another game.

As each year passes there are fewer people around who were there that day. There were only 10k spectators. If we want the legacy of that day ... in my view the family and all in it together feel to continue we need to evolve how we remember.

I personally don't like the '56' brand, re publishing images from the day etc but if that is what it takes for future generations to remember then I'm all for it.

    RIP x
