    56 stars are shining bright,
54 claret and amber, 2 red and white.
The tragic events that took you away,
Will be remembered always on the 11th of May.
Fans packed the ground, some young some old,
All unaware of what was too unfold.
To see the champions was the only aim,
56 lives lost at a football game.
The pain hasn’t eased after all the years,
Generations of fans all shedding tears.
The last home game is always sombre,
But heavens awash with claret and amber.
Your presence we’ll miss and the memories we’ll treasure,
We’ll love you always and forget you never.
So take a look at the sky tonight,
They’ll be 56 stars that are shining bright.

    11.5.85 RIP 56

Just about says it all for me, R.I.P the 56

Sorry Dave, but I hate that 'the 56' expression. I feel like it commodifies the people who lost their lives.
I know your post was heartfelt, but that phrase just grinds my gears.

I feel the same about a minutes applause in the 56th minute. The untimely and horrific death of 56 people isn't anything to applaud as far as I am concerned. Unlike remembrance of a long life well lived. People feel obliged to join in, even if they feel uncomfortable about it.
The minutes silence is the appropriate memorial.

It seems to be the new “ norm” it’s crept in and almost become commonplace.

Not really fussed, I remember in my own way. The crumpled program I got on the day is still in the house.

A minutes silence and reflection before the last home game is sufficient for me.

Felt really uncomfortable when the applause and chant started.

Why do fans have to start whinging about ‘the 56’ phrase and hoodies and chants etc? That is how some of our (often younger) fans (not me) want to remember that awful day and it’s absolutely fine.

they are paying their respects. There are more important things going on in the world more important than infighting and bitching.

the important thing is that, as fans, those who lost their lives and those were affected by the tragic events are never forgotten.

    RIP.

I remember comimg in from playing as we called it. I was 10 at the time and seeing my dad crying for the first time was a shock to say the least. He'd moved down to south wales when he was 16 , but to this day never forgets his roots. Took me up when they re-opened the ground , and were put up by his best mate Patsy Hollinger and family. I've loved everything to do with Bradford ever since .

I didn't want to say because I know Dave meant well with his post but I'm another who hates 'the 56' branding. I can't even bring myself to applaud in the 56th minute.

Thoughts are with all those on here and elsewhere still effected by the worst of days. Those who sadly never went home from a simple day of celebration and their families. Today is an anniversary, but I’ve seen first hand people still effected by that awful day on a daily basis, today is a reminder to treat everyone with respect.

I always look for positives in the worst of situations, the only one is improvement of ground safety throughout the country so that nobody else ever has to go through something like this again.

My thoughts are with everyone and the city today.

    RIP

I hope that Dave (@Bronco@Bronco ) isn't offended by my post. No one could doubt that his post was well intentioned. I wasn't trying to throw him to the the wolves. No one cares more about Bradford City than Dave does.
I just felt I had to comment on 'The 56' aspect, not the poem as a whole or the sentiments therein. I was there at the fire. I also, as a rookie social worker, visited relatives of a couple of City fans who lost their lives. I know what it means to me and others and I hate it when I see people walking around with '56' branded clothing etc. I didn't like the clapping on 56 minutes either. The quiet dignified approach that pertained until the last ten years or so was the correct one in my opinion. Some may disagree and that's their prerogative.
