I am just buzzing at the moment I just want to share. My eldest grandson who is has had to overcome many hurdles in his short life has just passed 8 GCSE’s. He now can join the Bradford City College, he needed 5, two had to be English and Maths. He starts officially in September for two years, half study and the other half training and football. He is also a fantastic runner and runs with the Bingley Harrier. Ok I will shut up now;)

For those that dont know, the GCSE'S are no longer A/B/C/D/E/gulp U,
Some official Wassock has given them numbers 1 to 9, where 9 is like an A* and 7&8 an A.

I mean on what bloody planet is a 9 better than a number 1?
Number 1 is what you should aspire to.
Should have left it as it was.

On a personal note, my youngest got his results today and picked up 8 GCSE's and 2 BTEC's and it only took me about half an hour to work out the bloody grades.

I'd rather have £9 than £1, but I get the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" sentiment. And congratulations on results

on the bbc news tonight they said kids only needed to get 22% to get a grade 4 in maths on what planet would 22% get you anything but a fail and a bollocking from your parents for not trying, its along time since my kids took their exams but that % cant be right just how low does the mark have to be to fail the exam

I think that is a quite old fashioned and rather negative way of looking at it. The current exam has to cover all abilities, from those who are super gifted at one end of the spectrum to those who will have learning difficulties at the other. The grade you get is a measure of achievement. A level 1 might mean everything to a child with many difficulties to overcome. Whereas a result that says you have failed is just a kick in the teeth for them. Further education establishments and employers will know the difference between a 9 mark or a 1 (or they should do).

If it is like when I did my GCSEs that exam would only let you get one of 4 grades, so yes 22% isn’t much right on that exam but builds on other exams.

I thought I heard somewhere that they had increased the level of difficulty in the Maths exam?

With them constantly changing them it may be different but back in 1998 when I took mine all exams were split into higher, intermediate and lower tiers and that restricted the best and worst grades you could get. Largely which exam you took was based on the set you were in, Set 1 got higher, Set 2 intermediate and Set 3 got lower

    Higher could get grades A*, A, B, C

    Intermediate could get B, C, D, E

    Lower could get D, E, F, G

For me, in Maths I was in Set 2 but at the top end. I could have done the higher but as there were some things that could come up on the higher paper that we hadn't covered in any real depth my teacher recommended against it. I ended up getting a B which required something like over 80% on it but on the higher paper, a B was only something like 40%. Their paper was harder so while it looks like a 40% to get a B is poor and easier to get than the B on my paper it most likely wasn't and swapping a B level higher student onto the intermediate and me onto the higher would have most likely come out the same.

I would imagine it the same now because with only so long to answer questions having an exam containing questions from the most basic to the most advanced isn't good for anyone

When did A**'s become a thing? Is this just another one of these things to make kids feel worthy like the give everyone a 'winners' medal on sports day. Move A* students onto A**, A's to A*, B's to A etc. And eventually just have everyone get an A ranging from Zeros stars to 9 stars.

Or is A** indicating something else? For example in Maths when I did mine the best people in Set 1 did a thing like American High School does with its AP classes and they did an extra maths class on top where they got to choose to study Stats or Mechanics and sat an extra (but separate) exam for it

Wonder if they are the same guys who changed the off side rule doing a bit of moonlighting for FIFA on the side.
