Made his debut. First touch led to a yellow card, but did well and looks to have something about him.
Hopkin was very complimentary about him in his post match interview. Says he has a "devlish" side to him, and is old beyond his years. Is the only 16 year old we've got who is not afraid to talk on the pitch and ask for the ball. Has been training with the first team for the past two weeks.
Says he reminds him of a young Alan Smith.

Lets see what happens. Edins eyes probably lit up, and he's already on the phone to his football mates in the Premier league sorting out a deal.

Hope not. Great to see we've got some young talent waiting in the wings. Good luck to the lad.

Let's hope he gets a chance as he is a very good cricketer so if he gets to the point where he thinks he isn't going to go too far he might opt for the willow.

Sounds good. I say we give him a 3 year deal now, just to be safe.

It's the only way to ensure that our squad of 41, stretched FARRRRRR too thin becomes a squad of 55 by the end of the 19-20 season.

    Don't see an issue myself.

Yep cos that worked well. This time we will not offer a deal and he will be the next Messi and it will be the chairman’s fault

    Kinda the problem.

We went from offering sensible 12-18 month contracts to everyone, to offering either zero security or full on three year deals to nobodies based on a few games.

There is no way there is any value in offering an under 23 player a three year deal since you are pretty much guaranteed compensation even if you fail to agree terms. Prior to failing to agree terms, you have full rights to negotiations, providing they're not 15 or under. Ball's always in our court for anyone between 16-23.

Three year deals are for 24-31 year olds, surely, people proven beyond doubt, and for whom compensation can't be earned.

But it's taken three years to realise that, handing O'Connor a three year deal as opposed to more Omari Patricks.

That's how slow the learning curve is under the Grade A Ding-Dong that is Edin Rahic.

Different situations for me. Patrick, contrary to popular belief, is and never was a long term project. How old is he now, 21 or 22? At his age he should be close to the finished article or at the very least, have the basic fundamentals in place. He's neither and is/aways has been very far behind in his footballing development.

Goldthorpe would clearly be a different type of investment and a better one as he doesn't have to produce results straight away. I'm not saying he deserves a 3 year contract but it wouldn't be the same as whenw e have Patrick one which was ridiculous

    He's 16?

No professional contract - 1st year scholar

    FA rules
"C. RULES RELATING TO PLAYERS Players with Written Contracts 1. (a) Minimum Age (i) A Player under 18 years of age and in receipt of full-time education* in accordance with the Education Acts may not enter into a contract of employment with a Club in membership of The Association or an Affiliated Association. (ii) A Player under 17 years of age may not enter into a contract of employment with a Club in membership with The Association or an Affiliated Association, except as a Trainee or Scholar as provided for by Rule C3."

Patrick's not had a lot of coaching. I'm pretty sure that his upbringing was non-league clubs in the Midlands.

I'm not agreeing with the 3 year deal, just explaining that the potential is there, based on his background.

Omari at 22 with little professional coaching might have more potential for improvement than a 17 year old who has been at a top PL club for 10 years.

You're deluded if you think we are going to maufacture a non league standard player into a high standard professional simply through coaching and 3rd rate facilities. Are you Edin? There has to be a certain amount of natural talent there in the first place and he has very little of it.

If Goldthrope gets game time over the next few years he'll end up with a far better footballing background than Patrick which will hold him in good stead.

I perhaps didn't make it clear enough but my comment was related to your post. My point is that he has so little ability, this potential you talk about is a myth and at this stage of his career we would essentially be trying to manufacture a player out of him which wouldn't work. As I said above, there has to be a certain amount of natural talent in the first place and he has very little of it thus negating his potential to grow

I think we should let this young lad settle here with City, playing in the youth team if we still have one. What we don’t want to do is rush him into the 1st team. I am sure DH will play him appropriately, I am sure he is very excited, but he needs to carry on listening to the coaches, working hard, and enjoy playing football. Let’s protect young talent, not exploit it.
