One of my nephews, who lives in Benfleet in Essex, has booked his driving test. After many months of waiting for a local test he has managed to book a test in November and in Bradford at the Thornbury test centre.
His dad, my brother, says he is a very competent driver who has been ready to take his test for some time. It is important he passes as he needs a licence for the job he wants to do.
Obviously it is a bit of a challenge taking your test in a place you are unfamiliar with, especially Bradford.
Does anyone know the test routes from the Thornbury centre? They are visiting a few days ahead so he can get some practice in, if we know the routes, even approximately.
    All help received gratefully.

It'll be a breeze for him, he's an Essex lad

If the route includes Barker end I pity him... not even Essex can prepare him for what is basically target practice :D

I think you are correct, they all start in Victoria Road which is nowhere near the site of the Thornbury test centre.

My old stopping ground, good luck to the lad taking your driving test in Bradford in this day and age you need nerves of steel, hopefully he won't need to go anywhere Santa Pod (Leeds Road).

I always think its handy If you know all the potential routes and familiar with the area.

I passed in 1978 from Eccleshill, living in Idle, I thought helped me as knew the whole area like the back of my hand and could anticipate what was coming in terms of junctions and hills etc.

I wish your nephew very good luck

At the time of taking my first driving test I took it from Wibsey as I lived on the doorstep of the driving test centre (Brownroyd Hill) so I was more that familiar with the route and possible problem areas, bearing in mine I'd been a Derek Trotter driver for several years, which in those days you could drive on a motor cycle licence. upload_2025-6-4_11-22-0.jpeg
After failing I put straight in for an early retest and was given Eccleshill (Victoria Road) I believe, the first obstacle was the The White Heart junction which I made a complete mess of as a car came flying round the bend, I though well that's me failed, on completing the driving part the instructor open his book with the road signs in asked my 5/6 questions then pronounced "Congratulations you meet the required driving standard) I couldn't believe what I was hearing, as I'd convinced myself after that junction screw up I'd automatically failed.

My Dad drove one of those for years, but it was an older model a 1955 Reliant Regal. It was made from fibreglass and had a soft top. He paid £5 for it. I was called upon to repair the roof when Dad discovered I did invisible mending in needlework classes at school.
We had to get an ordinary car when my youngest brother arrived and 6 of us wouldn't fit in it, so he had to take his test for a car as like you he'd driven it on a motorbike licence. He sold it for £5, the same price he'd paid for it. Memories...
I failed twice at the Heaton test centre but passed at Eccleshill. My problem at the White Hart Junction was a cement mixer that shed its load in the road, how helpful! We were barely moving for the emergency stop test, I put that down to being 7 months pregnant at the time, with the examiner worried a bit!

Thanks. A while to wait, he may get a cancellation closer to home. We'll see.

I remember doing my test at the Eccleshill centre as an 18 year old. Passed 1st time but I think he went a bit easy on me. My parallel park wasn't the greatest in the days before parking sensors and cameras. You kids today don't know you're bloody born.

Took my test up at Wibsey, remember it well. Jan 2nd 1976, it had been snowing overnight and the tests before mine had been cancelled. My instructor was a chain smoker called Derek and his car was a Moskvitch, built like a tank, but noisier. Morning of my test he rang to say it had broken down but he had managed to borrow a car for my test. He turned up with a little Datsun Cherry which, after the Moskvitch, was so, so easy to drive and I sailed through the test. Happy days!

I took my motorbike test at Wibsey in 1971 on a very unreliable BSA 250.
It broke down half way through, test voided and had to push it home to Bradford Moor.
