It had been rumoured for a while but it's finally been approved, Serie A and La Liga will have league matches played abroad for the first time. Villarreal vs Barca will be held in Miami in December and AC Milan vs Como will be held in Perth in Feb.

Uefa 'reluctantly' approves La Liga & Serie A games to be played abroad - BBC Sport

It's been a rumoured cash grab plan for some other European leagues for a good few months now as a way for these leagues to try find some extra ways of creating revenue but it's finally going ahead. Some of the American PL team owners are very vocal about wanting to play PL games away from England, notably the Americans at Liverpool have said they hope to have home games played in New York again recently.

There are currently only 8 PL clubs that don't have either a majority or minority American owner, how long do we think it will be before their mindset of global expansion that's now the norm in their sport is happening in England? Changes in the PL need a 14 team majority vote, but we are extremely close to being in a world where the PL is majority American owned (Spurs rumoured to be the next in line for a US consortium bid).

The fans reactions will be interesting, imagine having a season ticket at Chelsea, Arsenal etc and missing 2/3 homes games

Typical American project money money money.

I posted something similar a short while ago. It's only a matter of time before US owned clubs are in a sufficient majority to dictate all major PL decisions if they act together. And it won't take long before Amazon, Netflix and Comcast (which is a streaming company which owns Sky Sports) will be flexing their muscles even more so. I understand the attraction of US companies aiming to spread PL coverage to their own country but not at the expense of reducing either access or the quality of UK coverage and that includes EFL coverage. 'We' are very much reliant on Comcast money in particular to help fund EFL footie.

It will be a test for the new Football Regulator to somehow exercise control over the PL's plans for the future. He already has a longish list of stuff which needs his proper attention. Ownership structures will certainly be one. Funding of the football hierarchy, not just the PL, and improving the sharing mechanisms should also be high up on his agenda ... hopefully!

    “Reluctantly” my arse.
They had no choice as it clearly states there is no legal framework to stop it.

The whole statement from UEFA is pathetic.

The little smarmy Sky “Chief reporter” was on last night saying that Prem teams “will not be playing games abroad under any circumstances”

Absolute tosh from him as usual.

Money talks and it’s only a matter of time.

They cant these days, if they miss a few games their season ticket gets stripped from them. I was listening to a podcast hosted by a Chelsea ST holder and he was critising the money grabbing from the club in various ways but the ST prices this year were as expensive as ever but Chelsea told fans they had to buy their 4 home champions league group game tickets as part of their season ticket as one package, before they even had the draw or anything at £71 per game. So Chelsea fans essentially had to spend another £284 quid each to get their ST and a family of 3 who he'd sat with for the last 10/15 years couldn't afford that extra money on top and had to give it away.

Lots of the big clubs have cap rules now where you have to hit a certain percentage to keep your ST. So telling those same fans that "you aren't allowed to miss a game, but we will sell a game away to American and you'll like it" will be fun to see play out.

I noticed a few weeks back that there were a lot of Gov jobs listed in Manchester around the new Football Regulation area. I'm guessing literally every decision they make will be discussed to no ends length at first.

My workmate’s a season ticket holder at Man Utd

If he misses 4 of their prem home games he loses his season ticket.

Money for home cup games is automatically taken from his account whether he decides to go to the game or not.
If he’s chooses to not go his ticket is offered on a resale site at a big mark up.

I know this is not exclusive to Man Utd but as you say how will it work if they have a home game in Florida?

It's not as bad as it seems. If you can't go you have two options
    1. You can transfer it to a friend but it has to be done via the official system rather than just handing it off. And they have to be a club member. A big part of this though is to both stop touting and also security which is obviously a much bigger issue these days so if that person does something they know who it is and also it helps reduce the chance of those on banning orders getting around the ban. If you transfer your ticket via the official system it counts as you attending
    2. You can sell it back to the club so you get part of your season ticket back and credit for that match. The club the resell it, usually as part of one of the hospitality packages
It's maybe not as bad at United but there are certainly some clubs even in the prem where bad weather or a less appealing match you see large amounts of the empty seats

Anyway I believe in things like the NFL they know who will play the foreign matches and who is technically the home side and the season ticket prices are adjusted if they are the home team playing a foreign match

Not everywhere, it's certain teams that do. Eagles fans prices actually went up last season and they lost a home game to Brazil, no funds were given back. LA Chargers fans are in the same boat this season with no refunds or perks from losing a game on their ST. Their fans still have yet to get any pennies back from losing a game. Average ST price for the Chargers this season (8 home games rather than 9) was $1,554.

I remember the days when Alan Sugar said he was getting out of football as there was no money in it. Sport has changed since then, the American ownership models in football follow how they run their own domestic sports. The fan/supporter is merely a cash cow, changing stadiums to specifically cater for the casual. Now a multi billion dollar empire that has ripped the soul out of what i remember as top flight football, what was a working class pastime passed down from fathers to their kids now aimed at completely different markets. Sad in a way as its part of my childhood and upbringing, the worry for me is the pricing out of the game of the genuine supporter base to replace with corporate greed.

An English owner who had a 30,000 seater stadium in the PL that was full every week with a massive ST numbers backlog and demand coming out their ears would look toward expansion to fill demand...... the Americans would instead cap STs and bring in a membership plan and make the 30,000 tickets as expensive as possible. Their stadiums have some weird builds too in the name of making the most money as possible.

So the LA stadium which the Chargers and Rams use is one and a lot of the newer NFL grounds have this, but the pitch side seating is the corporate boxes. They market the boxes as being as close to the action as you can get and the best seats in the house and all that jazz. So the rows of actual seating don't start probably until like row 10/15 in a normal stadium? Going to be ridiculous to watch in the world cup next year when a player scores and runs of to celebrate in front of whatever company or celeb have a box for it pitchside.

They might get away with it in the US I'm not sure British football fans would put up with it, we saw the backlash to the proposed European League.
