You generally fish on the bank m8. So he was fishing on the Trent. It’s generally given as obvious, that at some point the tackle is dangled in the river as well. Is it just me?!?!

You could fish in it maybe, wearing your wellies perhaps. But on it? That would take some sort of levitation.

It's a nice river is the Trent. Used to live next to it. Good couple of pubs along it too. Nice amble along and have a couple of beers.
