So Covid IS partially to blame for this mess then? Because without it the Tories wouldn't have been able to give the money away in the manner you suggest?

You couldn't have had a more socialist government these last few years if you had tried ...

Workers n Grafters all year have been warned not to ask for decent pay rises as it adds to inflation-
Shirkers n Paid Layabouts n Tory Pensioners why have a 10% handout, you deserve it!

Mind you, come next April inflation will still be in double figures?
The tories just looking after their most important voting base.

Well it was a socialist budget mate which is why I'm bemused at Labour voters and left wing media moaning about it.

How can the same people who were in cabinet during the Truss budget supporting that suddenly 8 weeks later be supporting the Sunak budget.

It all stinks of personal gain. Give these people a cabinet role and they would support anything and that is what is wrong with the Tory party at present.

I agree with your overall comments but it wasn't the government that financed the Covid period it was the British tax payer, as you say it all had to be paid back at some point.

Many people who were living it up on furlough and wanted it last forever would possibly have had a different mindset if they had to pay it back via their own taxes, however everyone has to pay it back, even those of us who worked throughout Covid and never received a penny.

I believe furlough was paid via their employers would it have been the companies responsibility to give the relevant information to the tax people, many companies if the media are to be believed claimed for more people than the company actually employed.
I was reading an article the other day quoting Bradford Council are one of the worst in England for the none recovery of Council tax I believe the quote was £36M unpaid.

I thought this was a decent comment selected from the papers today:

"Unforeseen fiscal black hole my arse - it's a made up one. There is no need for any of this nonsense, the cure to the ill is removing the cause & you spell that Conservative.
12 years of utter economic illiteracy & political incompetence has consequences - who knew? You can't pretend none of that happened, then pretend you're another government, then pretend that you can cure the ill when it was you all the time. Well, you can pretend I suppose which is what is happening.
I don't know why anyone votes Tory, it is a complete mystery to me. Perhaps they are masochists or something. You really would need to be."

Bradford Council are usually the worst for anything. £36M lost in unpaid council tax is probably the tip of the iceberg. Look North was saying council tax has increased in Bradford faster than anywhere else in Yorkshire, and seeing as Hunt has removed the 3% cap, it will be rising even faster going forward. After all what do you expect from a council who spent £4m to buy a car park to knock it down.

Masks forever, tests forever, social distancing, closing of public spaces, etc, etc. Those people have quietly disappeared after being quite happy to see money wasted. Messers Drakeford and Sturgeon didn't care which businesses went under as long as they had their power trip and now the chickens are well and truly coming home to roost. And those of us who spoke up against this madness, we were Covid deniers.

I bet if Rachel Reeves had the opportunity again she wouldn't just stand up and get right in to delivering her own speech, but she'd pause, reflect and say "Mr Speaker, just look at them, observe them all, a government congratulating themselves with sickening enthusiasm for deepening the poverty of so many people in this country. A government completely bereft of shame and understanding about what they've caused. They're all treating this horrendously cruel budget statement as if its something to celebrate while their absent dishonourable colleague is making nearly half a million pounds making another idiot of himself on a TV show.

For me if was not a case of pro or anti Covid denial I have never witnessed anything like it in my life time so I was happy to go along with what the experts were saying, but unfortunatly with most things there are experts with contrasting opinions.

A socialist budget would have reformed the tax system to recoup the nearly 1trillion in money they printed for covid. They paid furlough, the people spent it on stuff, that money still exists floating around the economy and causing inflation. Have they tried to get it back? no

Would a socialist budget protect the people who send their kids to private school from having to pay VAT on their purchase?

Would a socialist budget protect the status of billionaires who declare themselves as non-doms to stop paying tax?

The reason they have protected benefits and the rest is because they cannot cut it any further without endangering swathes of people and causing mass poverty and degrees of societal unrest. They already took everything from them.

Ive been reading the points you make and its really pleasing because your desperation and whataboutery is symptomatic of the conservative mindset as a whole. Meaning, its nail in the coffin time for a good ten years or so for the tories.

I tell you what seems to have gone under the radar until this morning. The OBR document accompanying the budget forecasts a 23% rise in fuel duty in March 2023!! I think Mr. Hunt must have forgotten to mention it.

I keep reading this so called 12 year of incompetence by the Conversative government, yet the people of this country have had chances to vote them out during this period, yet never did.

The alternative was Albert Steptoe. That obstacle has now being removed and it's the Tory party who are a bunch of clowns. Many in the cabinet would argue that white was black if it kept them in their job for another few days. Which is precisely why you are seeing people defend yesterdays Autumn statement in the same way they were defending the one from Truss. Nothing has changed in 8 weeks, there was still a war in Ukraine, Brexit existed, Covid had happened, energy prices were through the roof, yet the current chancellor stood up yesterday as if all these things were suddenly something that just happened yesterday.
