Between that and the news on the BBC that only one in 500 people were infected in the population in the week up to 10 April I'm getting a bit concerned that there won't be anything to scare us about soon.

Maybe time for another nasty variant to make an appearance somewhere?

Pathetic that we are not requiring proper hotel quarantine for travellers arriving from India.
If this variant takes a hold and proves resistant to vaccines then it risks undoing all the good work from the vaccination programme and putting us back in another lockdown later in the year.
When is this idiot government going to start being proactive instead of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted?

Suppose the scare stories work on some people.

The key word there is "if". Shouldn't we at least figure out whether it is the case first?

By which time it's got beyond containable. 'Wait and see' has been their approach all along and look where that's got us.

Blood clots after the vaccines are a lot more common than the press are making out. It's not just the AZ vaccine either.

I've seen a few posts online showing the chances of getting a blood clot from the vaccine versus that of getting a blood clots from COVID but age, weight and health aren't taken into account.

The government have apparently been advised to restrict the AZ vaccine to the over 55's, but due to the supply issues with the other vaccines, they rejected this advice and went with over 30's.

I've decided I won't be taking the vaccine. I've been called selfish by people because of this but I don't think they understand. I've already had COVID, my symptoms were mild. Why would I risk even the slightest possibility of leaving my young children without a father by taking a vaccine I don't need?

Imagine been given a gun with 1 bullet in a 500,000 chamber and being asked to play Russian roulette. Would you play?

It's about choice. People need to make their own choice after weighing up the risks and benefits to their family and themselves. Nobody should be forced to do it or made to feel bad about whatever decision they make.

"As yet it is unknown what impact they would have on the effectiveness of the existing vaccines"

Isn't the mantra that we have to "follow the science" or is that just when it causes us to be cautious?

Evidence based decision making rather than having a panic every time a new variant pops up. It isn't even scientifically a 'variant of interest' yet let alone a 'variant of concern'. Proportional responses based on scientific evidence seems a relatively reasonable response rather than just guessing what might happen.

Plus.....its already here, as every variant across the globe will eventually be. The idea that we can 100% keep things out is a fallacy that should really ahve been forgotten about months ago by anyone with a sense of reality.

Of course we can't 100% keep things out. But if we had proper quarantine and better track and trace we could limit the spread from localised hotspots.

We have quarantine for everyone coming in plus testing. It has to be in proportion though, not just because the media have found some variant that MIGHT cause concern, it has to be based on the scientific evidence.

Test and trace is done. It never worked anyway because people didn't adhere to it but the chances of people isolating for a disease they've been vaccinated against is pretty much zero.

The latest information on the 'variants of concern' is mostly positive.

Firstly, evidence from Israel suggests the current vaccines are mitigating the effects of the South African variant, with only mild cases reported. It would not be unreasonable to expect that the vaccines will be similarly effective against the Brazilian variant.

It is a bit early to tell how effective the vaccines are with the Indian double mutant variant, but there are indications that the vaccines will retain a good degree of effectiveness against this variant as well.

In today's Telegraph, Professor Adam Finn, a JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccinations & Immunisations) member, stated that he expected a gradual erosion of vaccine protection as the virus evolved, but not enough to scupper the Prime Minister's road map. And Dr Susan Hopkins, who you may have seen at some of the Downing Street briefings, stated that while vaccines may be slightly less effective against variants, it is highly likely that they will still be very effective at reducing hospitalisations.

So, it seems that the rate and degree at which this virus mutates is relatively slow, which is buying us time to roll out a vaccine that better deals with these variants and should help to protect us against further mutations.

I remain confident that the autumn '3rd jab' will get the UK back to close to normal. In the meantime, the cautious and gradual lifting of restrictions, according to the Prime Minister's road map, seems a sensible way forward.

Got my follow up jab this morning I'll keep you posted, as you say all about choices but for me being seriously ill and a possibility of long term Covid, then of course the AstraZenica jab potentially being a life saver for us oldies it was a no brainer.

India now added to the red travel list. Sensible precaution that affects relatively few people but should help slow the spread of the Indian Covid variant.

Of course this should have been done at least two weeks ago. The only reason it wasn't was because of Clown Johnson's proposed trip to India. That has now been cancelled - as was obvious to everyone but our idiotic government that it inevitably would be.

I understand from a friend I know in the foreign office that Johnson didn't want to upset Modi by cancelling for a second time. Not a good look when you're trying to get half decent post-Brexit trade deals.

Over a year into the pandemic and they are still making decisions after the damage has been done. They appear to have learned little.

Just came on to post this!

Of course. All the scientists that were saying "wait and see" for the last 2 weeks should just have been ignored.

They do what you wanted them to do and still not happy. Shows the mentality.
