We will be in tier 3 or a tier 4 if one exists.

The enforcement had been a joke throughout, and now it's more people staying inside for the tyre fire than it is for the lockdown.

Our council sent a letter with the lockdown rules which arrived for most about two weeks into lockdown which is simply pointless. Still the council leader is more bothered about bagging the job of West Yorkshire mayor than anything else.

So the Oxford one is only 70% effective against the other 2 90% but is far cheaper to buy, Government has ordered 100 million doses of the cheap one

Its quite confusing. They are saying that a single dose is 70% effective, but a half dose followed by a full dose is 90% effective. Just to make it more confusing a full dose followed by another full dose is only 62%!!!

You need to read into the detail. Yes, the headline figure is 70%, but Oxford trialled different dosages and one of those returns a 90% effectiveness. Clearly, the 90% effectiveness dosages, will be the ones administered for this vaccine.

Furthermore, it is the first vaccine to show that it can stop the transmission of the virus (as opposed to stopping someone becoming infected, but still able to transmit the virus).

Yes, I believe it is the media that is getting confused by the release of the data. They have a method (half dose, then full dose later) of achieving 90% effectiveness.

I'm not sure they're saying that a single dose is 70%. That is just the average across all dose size but every person needs at least 2.

They are saying that a smaller dose, followed by a larger dose seems to work better but while they don't know why they're not going to draw any firm conclusions on it.

Overall I think its pretty positive. Obviously you'd like a higher percentage of protection to start with but at least they can play around with the dose sizes to find where it's optimal. The low cost and relative ease of transport makes it simpler alongside the other ones already announced.

That's comparable with both the Biontech and Moderna vaccines which achieved 90%+ efficacy from a double dose of the vaccine in their Phase 3 trials. As you say, neither of those two vaccines have yet demontrated that they can prevent the transmission of the disease in those who have been immunised as well as providing the individual protection. It appears that the Oxford vaccine does reduce transmission rates as well as providing protection. And of course as has been widely reported, there are particular storage issues with the Biontech vaccine.

I was listening to one of the professors (Pollard?) who are in charge of the project describing the results of the trials and he was puzzled about the size of the first dose producing different outcomes. Apparently they have trialled 3 levels of the initial dose, each followed by the full dose and the outcomes were quite different ranging from around 60% to about 90%. He was genuinely at a loss to understand this but was confident of getting to the bottom of it.

    It's all good news though!

One more thing with the Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine. It appears to be more effective in preventing hospitalisation than the BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

As we get more vaccines and more data, it is likely that we will be able to target certain vaccines on specific risk groups, to achieve the best overall results for the population.

Between the vaccine news, the plans to roll out quick testing more widely to shorten isolation and the indication that lockdown is working this is probably the most positive day we've had for quite some time.

    Listening to Boris,

The old tier system is being used but everything moving up one.

So the New Tier 1, 2 and 3 is basically the old Tier 2, 3 & semi full lockdown.

The drink with a substantial meal of Tier 3 is now tier 2, with all hospitality to continue as full lockdown (takeaway only) in Tier 3.

No area knows which areas are in which tiers which gives business no planning time and many probably already expect the worse.

I'll be keeping myself to myself and will spend Christmas with my family rather than go out anywhere as the going out experience is pretty dire under the new tiers.

I would guess that if you have a hospitality business in Bradford it would be expect Tier 3 with the rate being at over 400 per 100k.

If it is tier 2, good luck with BCAFC picking out 2k from 7k season ticket holders to attend a game, and like before with regions moving up and down tiers at a moments notice, expecting to go to a game on the Saturday with the tier changed on the Thursday will be fun. It's going to be a nightmare planning wise.

Boris Johnson has confirmed local councils will not be able to negotiate over tier restrictions when the second national lockdown ends on December 2.

Should be interesting. Wonder if he is going to detail how places get in a lower tier

It'll be interesting to see the peaks and troughs of cases from Nov 2020 - Feb 2021 in a few months. A lockdown followed by a Christmas knees up should see some drastic swings.
