And yet cheap and nasty won the contract time and again which means they were offering the club the most cash

The catering is run by CGC Event Caterers they have been caterers at York racecourse for many years along with the other Yorkshire racecourses also doing events and weddings etc. I believe there contract is up possibly re negotiations are going on. Edin was the man who took over the negotiating previously so we get what we pay for.

The banqueting is quite good at the club but the ground kiosks are shocking and getting worse with staff on minimum wage with service to match. I know there are practicalities but I would like local caterers to bid for one or more of the kiosks they know their business and the good ones do it well

The Bantams Bar facilitates are rather poor not value for the extra money. It would be ideal for a franchise/sponser to take over and fit out. The Main Stand concourse is ideal for local street food type pop-ups .Any improvement will get people in early and spending money.

I'm guessing this will never happen while we are tied into a contract with a catering company. The club has done the figures and it seems the best deal for the club. I agree with your post though, i've been to Headingley a fair few times over the years for cricket and Rugby and the catering is 2 or 3 levels above what is offered at City. Our catering around the stands is still in the dark ages. Not as bad in the corporate areas but still not as good as Headingley.

To expand on this, no disrespect to the staff at Valley Parade but most of them have not worked at a higher level sporting club or facility. Maybe take them on a fact finding trip to a bigger organisation, like they do with coaching staff at various clubs, where they can gain experience of how other clubs run their off field activities.

Even the banqueting is not as good as it should be and well short of others, Have been in regular and have yet to get the coffee and sometimes even the desert before going in to the game as service is that slow, Went to old trafford and they serve the desert at half time if you have missed it, At VP they just give up with any pretence of service at half time and after the game, Second class,

As you posted RT I think you've got a good point but when I look back at my time working for NMW there is a no motivation to work hard or offer a service, you do the bare minimum and in my case hope you stumble across an opportunity to propel you. Some say it's lacking self pride but NMW is nigh on impossible to even be able even run a home, so these guys/girls that turn up on a Saturday probably don't give a crap and I can't blame them.

As has been mentioned, it needs local caterers who are truly passionate about the food that they are serving. I'd rather pay £5 for a decent bowl of curry over the pies and I'm sure I'm not alone. I'd love to know if we've even spoke to these local businesses to see if there is a viable model for it, I just can't understand how there isn't a way of doing it?

The club are obviously been paid a fee by the current catering company, could we not say to these people you can have X space but we take a certain % of each transaction or something along them lines? I don't want to eat the crap pies that you have to pay ridiculous price for, but give me a top notch bowl of curry I'll pay for it as I'm sure others would.

In the past when the catering contract has been discussed, under previous owners, it was always said that they went with the company that offered them the most guaranteed money as it allowed budgetting rather than not knowing each month what income was coming in. I suppose it is similar to them selling a season ticket, guaranteed cash, rather than gambling on people paying each match, higher income but no guarantee.

I understand that but these people paying for the contact aren't doing it to lose money are they? They're doing it because they're making money from it.

Yep, the current catering company are presumably making money but the club have transferred the risk from the club to the firm. Baldwin said in the past that the club couldn't run the catering and make the profit that the company was paying as the guaranteed fee. It is a risk going with a cut of the profits as they may not make any.

I'd say let the external people i.e local people work out their margins but we say we take a % in a transaction and not the profit.

If we aren't forward thinking we'll go absolutely no where, I mean forward thinking but realistic. This area of match day experience is something we can develop, these carters are doing absolutely nothing special.... Pies in the oven and some crisps it's not exactly rocket science is? People will pay for that they want, especially food!!

As I have said before, it depends whether you actually want to offer a service to your fans or not. What I don’t want is the cheap and nasty food currently on offer. I also wouldn’t mind betting that they would make more money by offering quality food. As @BradfordBanter@BradfordBanter stated, a decent bowl of curry for £5, would sell guaranteed.

Plus as a local business this is new business win win as far as they are concerned. Of course the club will take a% slice, I would be amazed if that didn’t make money for the club. Keep the menu simple or as suggested, small little kiosks, curry and a chapati, donuts and ice cream and tea and coffee. Try it out first see what sells well. We really need to up our game.

It's right though Onside, I bet the majority are like me that they just don't buy food at football because it's over priced rubbish. The market for food and drink could be so much bigger than what it is with a bit of vision.

Just think these curry houses, Chinese restaurants - they would have footfall that some restaurants wouldn't get in half a year I'd of thought? I just think we are missing something in terms of hospitality.
