Yes but there must be a contractual reason, can’t think of anything what it might else be?

Yes but every player gets paid until the end of July by their old club when out of contract.

So why aren't our 8 new signings being called trialists until the first of August then? They were all out of contract too when we signed them.

By agreement with their previous club. And it just could be 2 years from the day he signed. I don’t know , tbh, and surprisingly I don’t care. He’s no longer one of ours.

True Kev, but what if it's been done so we can take him back if we don't manage to find another striker before August :eek2:

Joking - or at least I hope I am!

That isn't the full story. Yes, the 'old' club continues to pay the player in July but only IF he hasn't signed for a new club. He remains registered with his old club. I obviously don't know the specific details but it appears to me that CD is getting an extra month's salary from us in preference to signing for York for that month on a new much reduced salary.

Using my link above, CD played for York against Whitby last Saturday.

Your link says CD isn't signing with York until Aug 1st. That doesn't mean he can't play for them until then but not as a registered player only as non-contracted or as a triallist.

Which is weird given the signing was officially announced as a done deal on York City's web page on the 21st June. It also says Donaldson would rejoin them on completion of his contract with City. As he has been training with the squad and featuring in their pre season games, I think it is safe to say he has certainly rejoined them, which can only mean his contract with City has been completed.
The FA rule that the former club should continue to pay a player for a further month if they don't get sorted with another club seems a decent and fair agreement, but as Clayton very clearly had another club sorted out before his City contract ended at the end of June, it doesn't feel like he has been decent or fair here.

Clubs play fast and loose with the term 'signing' to show that some progress is being made, probably to appease the fans. But what really matters so far as playing is concerned is the date when the registration is completed with the FA/EFL.The fact that City continue to pay CD means that his registration is still held by City until 31 July. We're not immune form this and we've 'signed' players even before their registration could even be submitted. As an example, we announced Billy Knott's 'signing' in May 2014 despite the transfer window being closed at that point and registrations can't be completed until after the transfer window has opened.

It's a murky area and I'm sure some take advantage of that.

If as has been suggested we are still paying his wages and hold his registration are we not then liable for him still if he gets injured even though playing for another club?

Certainly whilst he is registered with us, he is insured for all sorts of things. I've never really understood what happens in the case when CD is a triallist (in theory) playing at another club. There must be some kind of arrangement via the insurers for this situation since it happens so frequently every season.
