So Stuart was obviously fuming about being asked about strikers so often.

He has spoken about the names he failed to get, which has irritated some fans, and fair enough; but Stuart himself is obviously quite frustrated as well, hence he's probably trying to overcompensate.

So what is it that has made us so impotent at attracting players with experience and with pedigree or reputation?

I'm really, really beginning to question if it's not the sheer lack of professionals at the club who actually have good links and ties with other clubs. Rupp doesn't, I doubt Rhodes does, Stuart might, but so does every other manager in the Football League.

Put it this way: Stuart is keen to point out that there's nothing wrong with the calibre of players he wants, nothing wrong with the club's 'eye' for talent, so to speak, but clearly there's an issue with signing those players.

There's a reason we aren't the most attractive option, and while Rahic obviously papered over that by spending a small fortune assembling a dreadful squad, McCall isn't the idiot Edin was. So what do you think it is?

I said this in an earlier thread this morning. What have we got to attract players here? A big crowd? That may work for the odd few but not many. Aside from that, this football club has no selling points to players.

You'd think plenty would want to come to us if the worst we're going to finish is 9th.

Seriously though? We aren't an attractive option because the club is an absolute basket case and has been for a while now.

What ‘selling point’ do other clubs have, if they are all constrained by the salary cap? Just what do Blackpool, Accrington, Rochdale, Lincoln, Fleetwood, Wigan, Bolton, Oldham, or Hull have that would attract players to go to those clubs rather than City?

Didn't stop Sarcevic from going to Bolton?

There are plenty of basket case clubs that never struggle to sign players.

I think there's way more to it than that.

"The Valley Parade Crowd" is far too intimidating for home and away players alike.

Because they are probably buying into the club's future and its potential.

A quick look at the squad will let them know how successful it's likely to be under the manager. And players enjoy success.

    And more prosaically ..

    More wins > Bigger bonuses
    More points > Bigger bonuses
Promotion > Even bigger bonuses (not constained by the salary cap!) and bigger wages next season

In the current climate of a salary cap with basic wages being squeezed, more bonuses will be more than a little handy to any player who needs a few more tats and the finer things in life!

There's not WAY more to it.

Sarcevic is from the North West which must help but Bolton obviously stumped up enough cash to persuade him whilst we dithere over offering players like Cooke an extra £200 a week.

All those clubs are now bound by a salary cap and a limit of the number of players they can have on their books. I guess some of the players we are considering, may well be without a club and as the others fill up, then they run the chance of being left with nothing. I would add Tranmere, Salford and Port Vale to that list. Perhaps in the tea rooms of Harrogate, some may find attractions?

That's crazy talk, I've been informed by at least a couple of people on here that the National League is going to be WAY more attractive than L2 with the salary cap.

We don't have a unique selling point currently. Any player or agent can look at the last 5 years of this club and be informed. Manager turnover, player turnover etc. and of course players talk to each-other, like you do in any other line of work.

A large crowd might be an enticement for some but that's out the window for at least the next few months and it ultimately does not effect a players bottom line.

Again on the information front, it's all available. Who owns us, whats the level of interest and finance, facilities, training and medical, living in Bradford/Leeds/Harrogate/shipley glen canal.

No player just looks at a wage and says yes.

Facilities? Style of play? Successful managers? Ambitions on and off the pitch? Higher level of football?

And regardless of the cap, we could offer 3k p/w and another club 5k p/w and the player chooses the latter offer. The cap is overall not set on an individual's wages.

Firstly I think it comes down to money usually but everyone is skint at the moment so I can't see that being a major issue.

After that it will come down to the manager convincing the player (and the club if it's a loan) that we're the place to be but it's not happening.

People saying it's because we're a basket case run club and I disagree, we're just rudderless, but that direction can come from the manager. Remember we were a true basket case back in 2011 - Peter Jackson and Archie Christie falling out with Lawn - but within a month of being appointed Parkinson had got Andrew Davies in on loan. It can be done.

Maybe people just prefer playing for other managers, buy into the vision more, who you are working for is a big thing.

Graham Alexander and Gary Neville versus McCall and Rhodes, Not a surprise we lost out to Sslford.

Unless we manage to bring in 5 key players into this group there will be more of what was on display last night. Theres no "ownership" or leadership out there. We only looked anything when an 18 year old Staunton was on the pitch !. We literally looking around waiting for him for direction. Dont get me wrong thats a good thing we might have in Staunton. But come on we shouldnt be relying on him as good as he might be. He should be our bonus. So unless we get these five players that are genuine first team starters ? Only thing that will come from this season will be the fees we will get for Staunton and perhaps Wood ?. But maybe thats enough maybe thats the game now at this club producing a player that might pay a bill come next May ?
