He;s 20 years old and played 12 games for Carlisle.

    Had to judge him.

Think you mean Thomas had a loan at Gills. But agree, I've seen him a couple of times and he's been decent.

It would be nice to sign a player with a specialist position. Bang average players who are squad players seem to be a favourite for this club. Good luck to him and hope he does well and nails down one position.

Let's hope the next couple of players are specialists rather than jack of all trades....

Rory McArdle has always been a centreback who could fill in at full back. McHugh the same. Atkinson would play in goal if he had to but was primarily right side midfield. Doyle centre mid who could, if stretched, play centre half. All well and good if your 'utility' players stay firmly sat on the bench, its when they end up as main stays of your team in wrong positions due to inadequate signings in key positions. We have little funds available and a lot of positions to fill, i understand the need of players to adapt if needed. But i also remember with dread the times we had a central midfield of Routis and McMahon, neither central midfielders but 'versatile'. Or when we had the likes of Darby or Meredith out and were relying on 'versatility' to cover. No team at lower level can have two specialists per position, hopefully theres enough to make sure the versatile players aren't needed.

There's a bit of a difference with players who have a primary position and can fill in elsewhere though. Most centre halves could play full back and most at a push and most full backs could probably fill in somewhere in midfield.

I'm trying my best not to judge any player that we sign this summer until I've seen them play because I probably don't know 99% of the player who are reasonable targets but when even the press release for the signing can do no better than "hes not got a set position and tries hard" its quite difficult be overly positive.

Ipswich have been targeting Wyke, however, Parky wants to keep him.

The rumour of Elliot Watt is the sort of signing that has me intrigued, young and been trained at a very highly rated academy at Wolves, would be a loan as he is still under contract as far as i can see. And in the pivotal role central midfield, having seen what relatively unknowns did like Josh Cullen and Lewis O'Brien, i'm hoping if he does come he is the answer to what was a painfully slow and static midfield last season.

He played right back a few times. Unfortunately for him he wasn't the required standard in any position.

Horses for courses mate, the nearly season under Stuart he was first choice at right back, although I kept reading this or that player would RIP him a new one, ironically they rearly did.
His dead ball delivery was a big part of Stuart's decision to play him in preference to Darb's , to which McCall commented Darby was the perfect pro and understood the situation never failing to give less than 100% at training etc.
With regards wingers tearing him a new one sometimes he'd take a yellow to let said winger know not to mess with him, Kyel Reid being a perfect example at Bramhall Lane that put him out for months.

Last lad we got from Wolves served us well, let's hope this lad is half as good.

Lewis O'Brien hadn't played a first team game when he came here, likewise Josh Cullen. We've more chance of hitting a home run with
a loan player than a player signed from an average club in the same division as us. Won't happen every time, Joe Riley wasn't a loan but had built a false reputation on u23 football, but the hits we've had with Cullen Burke etc prove the loan market is key to success for a club with our set up.

I agree both Lewis O'Brien and Josh Cullen were highly rated by the clubs and still are. @Interested Bystander@Interested Bystander will know about Josh but West Ham were never going to let him go. In both LOB and Cullen the loans are to try to improve the player in match days.

Is Watt going to be on loan or signed?

If we sign highly rated players that the clubs see a future with then I have no problem with that at all.

No chance Wyke comes bakc here. Ipswich are after him. Our pittance of a wage offer means he won’t even consider us.

Watt played well against us at Carlisle bit lightweight but good on the ball and is a good ball player . With regards Sutton how many of our football pundits had heard of Meredith before he arrived ?. Give him a chance before the gallows come out .
