I don't get it, the poster in question is known for bigging up pretty much every player we've got but a player bettering himself is just 'average' and won't be a great loss. Baffling

So now I'm some kind of lightweight hypocrite who changes their mind depending on the weather? You do get so overtly emotional when we have these discussions.
I've never been one of those who's been entirely convinced by Vernham - as I said, because we've been spoilt by so many better wingers during the last 10 years.
I actually got tons of abuse for defending Adams dropping him and not Gilliead for that Swindon match - so I've been consistent. I like Vernahm - but no, I'm not convinced that when the pressure is on in a promotion race, if he has it mentally.
We're barely half way through June yet, you've already written off the signings!! I also remember plenty writing off Vernham when. he joined 17 months ago .
Plenty of clubs lose their better players and move on positively. -

No, Let's write them off, eh?
I bet you were doing cartwheels when Vernham arrived on 31st January 21st having lasted just half a season with Burton side that were rock bottom of the L1 table and seven points adrift. Or is it that different, because he worked out well? If so can you concede that these others might work also, work out well. -
You seem to think someone's a hypocrite if they are fine with a player leaving and accepts a lesser one.
What's that all about??!!! All that is, is a fan thinking that the club will be fine - because we're barely a third of the way through the transfer window. -
Mark Marshall in his first season here albeit in league 1 got 2 assists and zero goals.
Vernams stats hold up against these “great wide men” we’ve had over the last decade. -
Yes. There's still a lack of trust. So certain are some that he won't be replaced, you'd think the transfer window had ended.
I get it. Let's be honest we've had easily 8 bad transfer windows out of the last 10, but I think we can't always let the past dictate the future. -
Just been looking at Vernam's career. Started at Derby as 19 year old but never played for them. Loaned out three times. Transferred to Grimsby who also loaned him out to Chorley. Left Grimsby after 2 years and joined Burton. Only made 14 appearances and then joined us. Not too impressive in my opinion.

As we've both demonstrated - you can do anything with stats.
Thompson contributed goals / assists in crucial matches. Without him, I don't even think we'd had got to Wembley - he scored an opportunistic goal right at the time we were playing badly and when Burton should have been out of sight. Plus of course that brilliant cross in the final. For me he was our best player after the Swansea cup final - his never say die attitude dragged us up and I imagine inspired his colleagues.
Same for Marshall in his 2nd year. I've not seen that from Vernham. I don't think he's a big match player. So he's a loss, because Hughes could probably have made him one, but not a massive one. It's that simple.
And note I was very 'meh' about Thompson and Marshall in their first 10/15 matches with us.
Oh by the way. I love how you chose Marshall's first season. I'm judging him when he was at his best and his best, plus Thompson's was better than Vernham's.
Some of us think he can be replaced relatively easy. We'll see who's correct. -

I was just pointing out that your comment on our “great wide men” was ridiculous as Vernams stats are up there with them.
I’m not making out like CV is Messi but to think he won’t be missed after just being snapped up by a L1 team is a bit silly. The lad is only 25 too. Still got a good 7 years in him to find his best. -
Yes. I do think he would have been better under Hughes and so yes, would have been even better. So that's why I would have liked him to stay. -
-
I also think we all overtly rely on the stats. If we're judging last season on them, we were great as we have some of the best ExG ones!!
No. I've been watching our wingers / wide men for nearly 50 years and Marshall, Reid and Thompson were all better - because they had a better mental application - which we can see has been an issue for Vernham all his career.
Now could that have been resolved under Hughes? Absolutely. But we are not losing some kind of perfect player. When Marshall went, that was a big blow - because there was no-one better, for that money at that time. -
