My lad is 18 and starts in the world of full time work in September as an apprentice with the National Grid.

In the first year, 60% of the time he'll be living away during the week at training school near Newark, but coming home at weekends. 40% of the time he'll be at home working locally.

When he gets into years 2 and 3, he'll be spending less time at training school, and more time at home as he will be on site from his base in West Yorkshire.

Just wanted get an idea of what you guys and gals are doing with regards to board payments to teenagers in a similar situation? We have a family friend who is charging their lad £250 a month.

Suppose it all depends on how much he is earning.

When I was younger my parents 'charged' me and my brother a percentage of our take home wage, think it was a third. So if one of us earned more then we paid more but it was more equitable.

If you don't need the money, charge him whatever you think fair and stick in an ISA or similar until he's thinking about looking for a house and then surprise him with a decent chunk of money towards his deposit.

As an apprentice in 1979 my take home was £24 pw before I reached the tax threshold of which £8 was paid in board. Then I had to buy a metrocard to get from Shipley to gt horton which was possibly £7pm so roughly £14 pw to ( survive) on which looking back I was quite good at as we never seemed to be out of pubs etc. But thanks to my parents it really taught me how to budget

    Ive x2 kids 19 + 21

As soon as they hit 17 I paid there driving lessons and bought there first cheap cars + insurance ( which was as much as the car lol ) - they pay fuel etc

Hopefully to set them on the road to getting better jobs , which it has

Troy 19 trainee accountant at a school in Halifax
Ami 21 now a qualified dental nurse in Bingley

Both would have struggled getting these jobs without a car so I think it was money well spent

    Onto board

First year is free - they get to enjoy and save - holidays for Ami - golf clubs for troy lol

2nd year of work its £125 per month - they dont eat much lol

If they was both out on the piss each weekend Id think differently , fortunately there not and are both savers

I want them to have the things I didnt , And hopefully get a house deposit together in the future

As a side note , Im a bricklayer and have been 40 years - work hard and play hard

I was given nothing as a kid and again at 17 I bought by own driving lessons, cars etc with bank loans

I earnt £27 on YTS and gave a tenner to my mum and £5 on buss Kerchinger lol , Left me £12 per week to spend lol

The kids in my eyes are not spoilt , I just want them to enjoy life ... their good kids

Sounds like he will be getting a decent wage for an 18 year old. I agree with Monkey and it is our plan as well. Save as much as you can for him, lets be honest he'll probably piss it up against the wall (as we all probably did at that age). He'll thank you for it when he has a deposit on a place of his own.

We’re very proud of him. 16,000 applicants for 120 apprenticeship positions so he’s done very well.
