Agree with this. Hope he doesn't get too many requests to leave the field. Think he will be the one that allows Cooke to play in a more forward role where he is effective.

    Good signing.

The only box he doesn't tick is the brand new and exciting signing - but this is football, mystique is not really relevant.

I could see him playing a similar role to Law. Wide midfield on the left, plenty of licence to room and let Wood overlap. Not a fan of the Diamond midfield.

Me neither, can see you be wide open to an opposition set up correctly to counter if you don't get it right.

Was just thinking it was a bit extreme to compare mccall to turn a poorly performing squad round in 5 games to what bielsa has achieved over 2 seasons

It was in response to a post saying you can't effectively get better results out of the same group of players which Bielsa did. Mitigating circumstances with McCall in that it was clear no manager could turn this shit show around in a couple of weeks, the club was, and still is to some extent, in a downward spiral. Its why i don't think we will see much improvement till at least the mid part of the season. We still have problems from before McCall came which somewhat hamper his potential progress, terrible transfer windows in the summer and January, the January one beggared belief it was that bad.
Once the club shows signs of being better run off the field, and i'm yet to see that, then my belief is we will still struggle despite McCalls best efforts. I hope i'm proved wrong.

So you don't think Ben White & Diego Costa made much of a contribution this season for Beeston :innocent:

Not if you are flexible with it, if the opposition squeeze our centre halves and central midfield you use your full backs. Then if they push up all across our back four they leave space behind. Whatever level you are at you need to be flexible once the game starts.

With Wood at one side and rumours of us wanting a wing back on the right I think it will be a 433 with the wing backs giving the width.
Talking about Wood I thought someone might have come in for him he is looking good

I can see 4 3 3 as well. It makes sense with us employing some very expensive or at least seasoned strikers. DMH might play as a wide forward, Pritchard can certainly play centre midfield.

Very few managers if any are flexible, they stick to a tried and tested formula that guarantees them the most success. Parky was pretty much always rigid 4-4-2, with the the odd exception such as 4-4-1-1 with say Clarke behind Hanson. If i remember he did have a the odd play with the diamond formation and we looked awful. Not to say it can't work, but it will be a managers preferred formation if it does.

The same salary cap that hasn't been voted in by clubs...... Oh and the new proposal by the wonders of the EFL, is that players purchased BEFORE 6th August will not qualify towards the POSSIBLE salary cap. So the list by Tolly856 don't qualify but the scouting does......

Sutton- worked with McCall at Scunthorpe.

Clarke- Worked with McCall in previous spell.

Cooke- signed by the previous manager, briefly worked with McCall. another ex player.

Mottley-Henry- Ex player, worked with McCall

Please tell me there’s more to it than this?

The lack of scouting on display so far is quite alarming.

If we take McCall on his word regarding numbers (5 players or a squad of 23) this is the bulk of our summer recruitment done. We’ll sign Watt, add a RB, maybe have room for one more player and that’s that.

Don’t have much issue with the Cooke signing in isolation. Don’t think he’s as good as our fans make out personally but sure, he’s decent, has the potential to improve Etc etc. I get it. More concerned with the fact we’re going to up with an almost identical midfield to last season with seemingly little room to maneuver.

After Watt is made official we have 19 seasoned pros propped up by 5 academy graduates.

I have no problem with signing ex players if they are actually good and a reasonable level of scouting is evident elsewhere. There’s question marks over 3 out of our 4 outfield signings to date and it doesn’t appear like we are going to add an awful lot to it if McCall’s previous comments are to go by. I just hope the ‘new’ salary cap rules have changed the complexion slightly because the squad is more than Watt, a RB and last season’s out of contract squad members away from being complete.
