I thought this was an apt if somewhat too polite line from one of the BBC articles: "Over the years some quite strange people have taken over and run football clubs and they don't necessarily know how to run them," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. But this motley crew of chancers, conmen, and undesireables does know how to asset strip, spend (if at all) money they haven't got, and promise unicorns...

Only one relegation spot this year in our division -- just about the only good thing that's come out of all this. Hopefully Bury supporters will be inspired by the likes of Hereford, Wimbledon et al. and get a phoenix club rising back towards the League.

This seems the most likely outcome but will not be decided until a meeting of clubs next month.

The root problem of all this is funding arrangements from TV money. Businessmen good and bad take business risks if the risk/reward profile is acceptable. Different investors have different risk/reward profiles but there are many out there so there is lengthy queue of investors prepared to take big risks if the reward is high enough. The reward to get into the Premier League is huge so investors are prepared to risk £5m, £10m, 20m to get a chance of promotion from the Championship. More recently we find that the extra £5m TV money plus other revenue increases is causing League 1 clubs to gamble £1m, £2m, £3m+ to get into the Championship. The EFL can clamp down a bit on director approvals but investors will still take risks to get rewards. It is the gaps between Championship and PFL revenues that is causing the risk-taking and also that between League 1 and Championship. Clubs struggle with the downside when the gamble fails and will continue to. Too many clubs are gambling but investors alwsy take risks with money to get a profit. That is their living. That is normal. It's the very uneven distribution of TV money that causes them to take the big risks and they won't stop while it remains. So, EFL,Premier League, FA, Sky, BBC, BT, PFA, Minister for Sport, what are you doing to try even out the distribution of TV money that is causing, and will continue to cause, all these problems? Fans need to organise to press home to these organisations that the uneven distribution of money to big greedy clubs is destabilising and unacceptable.

Yes shocking signing......I believe Sunderland were reported to have paid a fee of around £500,000, Vaughan also scored 24 goals in helping to keep Bury in league 1 that season.
Maybe the owner at the time got a touch of the Rahic desease and though playing football chairman is a piss ball.

I'd think the owner made good money on that particular deal, maybe not the best example ;).

It is the perfect one as the club has lost over £2m a year since then. They may have got promotion and been sold on etc they lost money over the period.

If they had not done the Vaughan deal they would have lost well over £2.5 m including his wages.
Regards the owner, at the time it was quoted many times on the forums it would all end in tears and its looking like it has.

I wouldnt think Vaughan's wages would have been £500,000 so £500,000 less Vaughan's wages ?, I suggest Bury made money on that particular deal.

If they got £500k I’d think any profit at all would have been minimal once signing on fees, NI, etc are all taken into account as he would have been on a decent wage in the Championship and clubs such as Rangers were also in for him

I think Bury would have been happy with the deal, i just thought you used a bad example with regards Vaughan and maybe the money he asked for.

The example was used as it was him that was mentioned. His signing was part of the problem if they made a small profit or not from his signing

Remember the game well, 3-1 loss Beckford doing the Leeds solute, and me and my mates getting the old pound coins chucked at us as we left. We were behind the other goals that day though.

Preferred the season before. Glorious day, think it was national day. We were around where you must have been sat in that picture, Mark Marshall scoring in a 2-0 win which more or less sealed the playoffs. Some good times, remember a Tuesday night game as well think we won 1-0 with an Omar Daley penalty but might be wrong on that.

Yes as I say a bad example as they made money from his signing, if they had done similar with others they signed maybe they wouldnt be in the process of expulsion from the EFL.

Except I don’t accept that £500k would have covered all their costs of employing him for the period he was there, so no profit made

The only good thing to come out of this is the legislative action that is going to follow. So that clubs can’t overspend to gain an unfair advantage on well run clubs. I am gutted for the Bury fans
