When there was trouble it was all over the TV, nothing to do with what I read maybe they can't report somethings that's not happening, as I posted very selective reporting.

Trevor would disagree hence his point about record unemployment.

The labour shortages worldwide are well known and not all brexit related. But they are definitely impacted by brexit. There are clear shortages of labour in industries due to a lack of visa's and also a lack of people wanting to come here. Why would they pick fruit here when they could do so in spain without the need to apply for a visa and its associated costs. Why would they come here to solve our problems for us given the vitriol of the nationalists and their tone towards the EU and europeans.

The fact you keep stating that the issue of labour shortage is a worldwide problem is completely irrelevant. Because at the end of the day the labour market is still a market and we have to compete in it. The red tape and the anti immigrant hatred which has grown stronger in the UK makes us a less desirable nation to come to. Brexit has made the issue of the worldwide labour shortage worse for our economy.

You know as well as I do that there are thousands of career layabouts up and down the country who have never had the slightest interest in looking for work and live off money that the hard working 'donate' to them via taxes.

Haha, been working since 1976. Never claimed a penny in benefits other than child allowance.

I think it was an attempt to be humorous "Takes one to know one i guess... 'Idle' bantam", as the "Idle Working Men's Club" was years ago.

Brexit is making anything that relied on uncontrolled immigration "worse" yes, but that was partly the point. We no longer have an unlimited well of low skill workers doing low paid jobs so the economy needs to adjust, but over time it will.

But the underlying issue is still basically nothing to do with Brexit. I'd surmise its 95% a worldwide issue and 5% Brexit.

Trevor point about record employment is an accurate fact though and surely valid against the backdrop of the predictions of recored unemployment following Brexit?

To be honest I don't know why people would travel all the way here to pick fruite instead of in Spain whether you needed a visa or not? I can't actually think of a single good reason in my head.

Similarly though I can't actually think of a justifiable reason why an industry would need to rely on transporting low skilled staff thousands of miles to work on minimum wage is largely poor conditions. Taking all Brexit related stuff out of the equation is probably questionable practice any way and likely a sign of an industry in need of a modernisation push.

And I'm not actually sure the anti-imigration setiment has grown recently either. If anything it seems to have severely diminished since 2016 which probably suggests that the distaste was more to do with the uncontrolled nature rather than the immigrants themselves.

And surely it being a worldwide issue is completely relevant. Its completely valid context about what is a UK problem and what isn't.

Yes, there is always a tiny section of the potential workforce that chooses not to work. That number is largely insignificant in the scheme of things and is always massively exaggerated as an issue by the right wing press and in the public imagination.
But, that number isn't a cause of the current labour shortage. The hardcore 'non workers' are there regardless of whether we have high unemployment (ie a labour surplus) or a labour shortage.

If you want a high skilled high paid workforce like in some countries then you need to limit immigration to allow the supply and demand effect to change the economy from low skills to better training and education and competition for skills which will make the country richer as a whole.
Tory policy in the past has always believed that immigration brings in the cheapest labor and lowers employment costs with a plentiful supply of cheap workers that boosts profits. The rule of supply and demand works in both ways, High immigration and lots of cheap labor equals low wages, Low immigration and competition for workers leads to investment in modernisation, higher skill training, and higher incomes.

Just another example of the Guardian giving a platform to someone for purposes of political confirmation bias.

On what points is he wrong in his summarisation? based on what data? Id like to see what you have made your analysis with.
