In the US i think the issue is that older provincial malls can't compete with the newer regional supermalls.
In the UK, with the convenience of online shopping, the high street needs to offer an experience people can't get online.
Having said that, i'm personally not a huge fan of online shopping.
I've had some appalling experiences with some of the so-called courier companies.
In fact i tend to use click and collect where possible so i'm not waiting in or fannying about chasing orders because the courier couldn't be arsed delivering it.
If i need something i tend to just go out and buy it.
If it is clothing or a big ticket item (a luxury watch for instance) i would never buy it without seeing it first and trying it. Same with groceries, i wouldn't trust someone else to pick my shopping.
I think the issue is more with the younger generation who've grown up with online everything and are normalised to it.
I think the Broadway was always about addressing a basic retail under-provision rather than competing with Leeds, bringing Bradford back into line with the likes of Wakefield and Huddersfield.
If Debenhams loses stores, i think the older small town branches will be most at risk.
As an anchor tenant, i'm sure they'll be a getting a favourable deal with the Broadway.
Losing HMV wouldn't be a major loss IMO.
I would like to see something like London's Borough Market used as inspiration for the new food market, just with more sensible pricing and an emphasis on 'world cuisine' to reflect the city's multi-cultural heritage.

Very rare visitor to the centre of Bradford these days, but after a very enjoyable visit to the new Light cinema to see the excellent Stan & Ollie, we had a walk to the top of town.
Oh dear, even though Tuesday is always going to be quiet, the walk up Darley St. would depress even the most ardent of Bradfordians.
The few shops around town that were open were devoid of any customers, and it is tragic that it has come to this.
Don't know what the solutions are, it seems too far gone to me. -

I've not been to the one in Leeds but the cinema is great, reclining chairs and loads of room, cup holders and tables.
100 seats in the auditorium we were in, I think others are smaller.
Nice bar / coffee area too.
Really enjoyed the film, but was already a L&H fan. -

I'd cut "security" slack though, proper security on proper security pay would gave waded in and sorted it out pronto. It's just not right to expect a MW slave to get involved IMO, you shouldn't be expected to get your head kicked in for £7.80ph -
EDIT...
Just seen it on facepest... absolutely bloody awful attack. No doubt the Police will say that the images aren't clear enough to form a positive ID and it will end up going unpunished. -

Leeds skyline is buzzing with new developments all the time, It is a vibrant place to do business and to live with great shopping and leisure, Bradford however is a mess of empty shops, gangs of youths and a quite hostile area to shop or spend time in, @Nottsy idea of a car park is not a bad one seeing as no one is going to invest or build anything in Bradford without huge taxpayers money given to sweeten it
