I know, you’re right on the jobs front. But, short of spending a lot of money on infrastructure (the new proposed railway station would be fantastic) and incentivising companies to locate here, then I don’t know what the answer is. Bradford is a young City, with a rich history and fantastic architecture, it’s absolutely full of potential, I feel...Maybe it’s just me, as a proud Bradfordian, but I can actually see the Odeon being a catalyst for what I’ve just said, maybe!

Also, having lived close to Sheffield for the last couple years, a City that is similar to Bradford in many ways, the tram network there is fantastic, something like that in Bradford would be brilliant. I’m probably living in fantasy land there.

Having Channel 4's "second HQ" (branch office, then) here would have been a good start.

    Wishful thinking though, frustratingly.

The BID (business improvement district) vote could be interesting.

Yes it means local businesses delving into their own pockets but it could mean a pot of money with people who seemingly know what they're doing in charge of it.

On another note it doesn't appear the North Parade Street Party is going ahead this year unless i've missed summat.

Its a city born from the industrial revolution, that industry has been in decline in this city for well over half a century. Problem is it leaves behind an infrastructure from over half a century as well, some of more than double that. That infrastructure is not fit for the 21st century. And lets face it never will be. Anybody looking at locating business to Bradford in the 21st century must be wrong in their heads. The world has changes dramatically in the last 100 years and you have to move with the times. Bradford just doesn’t have that ability, it has served its purpose.

    Excellent points well made.

Maybe making it into the best 'Asian' city outside of Pakistan/India is a way to go, but is that really in the countries best interests. If it worked, was done in a positive way, and built integration, but if we are just going to end up with West Pakistan then alas, I think will have as much success as East Pakistan had.

Do it. You'll never look back and wish you'd done it sooner.

Don't think so. They do good beer and have 2 'proper' pubs in Leeds. Their ethos seems sound.

I'm meeting Les from t'Sparra later so will quiz him on the plans.

I bet we all have the same conversations at work! Everybody is leaving Bradford when they retire or the last kid leaves home. My two eldest have gone, they won't return to Bradford, when the youngest goes to uni next year we are selling up and leaving too. I had the misfortune to have to go to Thornbury today, it was like being teleported into an ultra violent Wacky Races episode, I won't have a heavy heart when I leave.:)

Funny you mention that, i was talking to a random black guy about this last week while i was working up Undercliffe. I mentioned the time the police raided the green lane area in big numbers about 1992 time when there was a large West Indian contingent living around that area. I was brought up round that area and knew quite a few. The days of going into the palm cove and the sugar cane are long gone, sad really because they were great times. Young lions cafe was a good place too but was never gonna survive in an area that shows more intolerance as the years go by. Like you, when my lad has gone to study and my parents may not be around i will look to move. I say that with sadness because of the memories i have but Bradford has changed and i have nothing in common with it anymore. I was in North Wales the other month, might look there.

Went to Pollard Park school back in the day so knew the area well. A prime example of a community disappearing.

Bradford was a great night out in the late 80s and early 90s. Loads of good pubs, clubs and regular live music.

It is so depressing and sad coming into the city now before the football. The centre is dreadful.

I really hope the new Odeon complex is a success, but @abbomf@abbomf is right. Without well-paid jobs in the city centre, it will never truly regenerate. It is hard to see how that will happen.

Trouble is, how many fit for purpose offices are left in Bradford? The buildings would need so much work to make them viable.

I was out in Headingley yesterday afternoon, and then Leeds in the early evening. We had a good laugh and drink. It was reasonably busy all day....But, it was just full of knobheads who can’t handle their beer.

    That's a very good point.

When I was at school in the late 70s there were more blacks than Asians. Great people too. It is where I got my love of reggae from.

Surely they can't of all just upped and left.

Marko from t'Sparra & Bundobust's taking a couple of clued-up folk around Bradford today for 'architecture, beer & curry'.

I'll be interested in their post-visit opinions.

We are like first world refugees who have lost their homeland. I know it isn't in the same league as Syrians, or the countless other refugees, but it is still sad that our history (pubs, night clubs, neighbourhoods, schools, shops, etc) has been wiped off the map in just a few years.

I'm already amazed how many City fans are no longer living in Bradford and it looks like a trend destined to continue.
