Beat me to it, Dennis... that was one that immediately came to mind.

It might help to define a riff...I'd start with the OED's definition as a short repeated phrase, and add that it might be anything from less than a bar to a few bars long, it is not limited to guitars, and it may reappear with variations.

The one that came to mind after Layla runs something like this: (name that tune in one note; no more than two needed)

Ba ba, ba-ba-baaa, baba baba ba / ba ba, ba-ba-baa baba baba ba / ...

    (I can't get no / Satisfaction / ...)

I feel spoilt for choice here although I'm not sure I can differentiate between a lick and a riff.

Another one or two ... or maybe three

Badge - Cream (or maybe Sunshine of your Love?)

    Purple Haze - Jimi

Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

    Oh go one.....

    Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Surprised nobody has mentioned "Seven nation army"which is probably the most popular riff of modern times, along with "Song 2" by Blur

Actually played by both of them. The low riff that opens the song is Clapton. The high harmony riff that comes in third time around is Duane Allman.

A couple of memorable ones from Magazine/John McGeoch: The Light Pours Out of Me, and Rhythm of Cruelty.

This is probably cheating a bit, but Chris Spedding's Guitar Jamboree has a few...

In a Hollow Horse - The Icicle Works, played by Ian McNabb. (Massively underrated in my opinion).
And strange but true, given all the mentions of the Allman brothers, my sister in-law was married to one the band for quite a while.
