Andy Cook and his future at City (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by Kevin1954, Aug 5, 2025.

?

What is the likely future for Andy Cook

  1. Essential starter (20+ goals a season Or ratio about 1:2)

  2. Important Starter (15+ goals a season Or ratio about 1:3)

  3. Starter but far less influential (10+ goals a season Or ratio 1:4.5)

  4. Impact sub (Success gets important goals)

  5. Sub (Little impact can’t find the net often enough)

  6. Never makes sufficient recovery to feature in a meaningful way

Here’s the elephant in the room ?

If Cookie was match fit and AFTER Saturdays showing, what would the formation be and make up for the next game ( irrespective home or away) based on a 3-4-3 which was Saturdays set up.

    Would we pick Cookie?
If so who would be benched in his place?

Cook for Humphrys or Bobby every day of the week in my book. I'd rather have a proper striker being the lone man every single time, rather than hoping a wide man playing inside can get us a goal. I think Humphrys had at least 3 maybe 4 good chances for a goal on Saturday, Cook wouldn't miss some of those. Don't want that to sound like a knock on Humphrys as its not intended to, it's just one is a career goal scorer and that's not the traits of the other.

Some won't like this but I'd have Cookie on in a heartbeat. Move Humps to the left and Bobby on the bench.

An unpopular opinion - but I don't think Cook will be a regular starter, even when fully fit.

I don't think it's that unpopular. Facing facts, he's almost 35 coming off what can be a career ending injury, if he manages to even break back into this side it's a huge achievement.

But purely answering the question of if all were fit who is our lone striker, for me its Cook without a doubt as a man whos made a career off of scoring goals in any team he's been in. Over Kav, Humps and Swan who are all talented players, but are nowhere near Cooks level so far in terms of putting the ball in the net consistently.

May well happen in a few months but we are where we are at the moment.

I was impressed with Humphrys on Saturday. Didnt do alot wrong. Played his part in both goals and on another day he gets his goal for 3-1.

Im a big Cook fan, has a real part to play for us this season but his record at L1 level is 13 in 48 when he was in his late 20s. His entire career bar one season has been in L2, NL and below.

Cook and Humphrys are both pretty much 1 in 4 Forwards at L1 level with Cook having a slight edge.

100% Which has been said multiple times over the period since Hump signed . People forget it’s a squad game and there will be times when Bobby or indeed others drop to the bench, despite their silly “valuations” . A great conundrum for any manager .

I think Cookie will mostly be used as an impact sub, brought on for the last 20-30 minutes against tiring defenders, after the likes of Humphreys and Kav have relentlessly pressed them for an hour or more.

That's the best way to use him, Wrexham played this last season perfectly with Fletcher, who came on and bagged some crucial goals when needed.

Yes good shout . I think his “ starts “ may not be as many think ? It really depends on his recovery . We know GA is ruthless, making nobody undroppable.

I think if the Monster starts 20 plus games he’ll be 1 in 2 even at this level.
I wouldn’t be surprised with a very mixed top scorers with about 4 players at double figures or about but no standout

So what you're saying is that a strikers value to the side should be judged solely on how many goals they score?

Hump was excellent on Sat, scored non , zilch, nadda yet as you rightly suggest, he “made both”. Value added in spades yet no goals to his name.

So because Humphrys didn't score we should discount his contributions that lead to goals. Would you have preferred him to do nothing all game part from score a goal and we draw 1-1?

Nope, again didn't say anything or the sorts that Humphrys should be discounted.

But you've said you'd take Cook over all the others because he scores more goals. Which bit am I not understanding?

Anybody who has any interest in City at all should be hoping Andy Cook returns from his serious injury and returns to his magnificent scoring best. He will be a year older and playing in a league above after this very bad knee injury it will be a very difficult task.
After Humphrey signing on interview in which he said playing centre forward was wasting his talent and watching him in preseason I was disappointed he started there on Saturday. However his brilliant performance has taken the pressure of Andy’s return and if Humphrey keeps playing like that he can be eased back gently.
