Jamie Walker (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by Silverbantam, Apr 28, 2024.

?

Are you happy with Jamie Walker remaining a City Player

  1. Yes give him a 2 year flat contract

  2. Yes give him a 2 year incentivised contract

  3. Yes extend his current contract for a season

  4. Offer him a 1 year deal on improved terms

  5. No, sadly injury prone, there are better options out there.

So why didn’t we activate his extra 12 months and renegotiate new terms like with Halliday and Pointon?

Because they are probably dangling a carrot in front of Walker so he signs a longer deal but on reduced terms, possibly with incentives for appearences.

Looks like City want to keep him but not on the deal he is currently on.

Wait, Jamie has an extension clause in his contract?

I thought he just signed a two year contract?

    That's surprising.

Can’t remember Jon, maybe someone else on here can confirm? Felt like I heard him say it though so maybe it was on the radio.

    Edit - found it here

    Wow, thank you!

Very surprised by that, very surprised also that they didn't take the option.

Like you say, must be due to injuries and a need to renegotiate the terms.

I'd be very happy if Walker stayed, but I wouldn't blame him if he got a better offer elsewhere and left.

If my maths are correct, he has featured in only 122 games in the past 6 full seasons. Compare that with someone like Jack Payne who has played circa 222 in the same time period

Do you really think Walker is worth the risk keeping if he is only playing just over half available games? I personally don’t, but GA is the man that matters, and he does

Only time will tell (assuming Walker accepts the offer, of course….)

Jamie Walker is a player who puts his body on the line every time he plays he is a very brave player. A pay as you play deal might just take away his edge

No player plays on a pay as you play contract unless their career is at the last chance saloon. A bit insulting to expect a player who could quite easily get a contract elsewhere to play on a contract with job security.

No chance will it be a pay as you play contract, not sure why it was brought up. I'm pretty certain it will be a lower weekly salary spread over 2 or 3 years, which will no doubt actually be more money over the course of the contract. £2k a week over 2/3 years is more than £3k a week over 12 months.

Because as much as we have to respect everyone's right to an opinion, some of those opinions are just plain stupid.

What ya reckon he is on - £3k a week?

Hopefully his new deal is an extension for his longer term security and rewards him for staying fully fit. While protecting the club if he misses games through injury.

    Seems fair all round?

Hopefully you are right, it makes sense. No reason he shouldnt get parity of his current weekly wage if he manages over 40 games a season though.

Pretty sure we offered Davies a pay as you play all those years ago and he fooked off to Ross County.

Not related to Walker, but I'm always wary when people mention goal bonuses too. Even if they actually exist they shouldn't.

I spent a few years doing contract work myself, to be honest it can be scary even on a decent wedge. I think he'll take an offer of a reduced weekly salary to get more overall and the security of a longer contract. If we kept him on his current deal for 12 months and he got injured, he maybe on a lot less in 12 months or even out of work full stop. Where as say he signs on a 2/3 year deal, then an injury gives him security in the longer term, especially at his age. I imagine Cook would have received a higher weekly wage had we given him 2 years instead of 3, companies work on yearly budgets so it is a win win really as what is happening at Chelsea on a bigger scale with their crazy 8 year contracts.

I am not surprised Davies left, not for one minute do I believe the club would be stupid enough to offer Walker a pay as you play deal, they are simply crazy. Footballers aren't as thick as they are made out to be, especially with often shrewd agents behind them and sometimes a shrewd wife!

No idea how true it was, but someone who's usually found to be right told me at the start of last season that Cooks new deal put him as our only player over £3k a week. I'm guessing Smallwood and Walker are on between £2.5k-£3k a week? Then the rest of the first teamers hovering around the £2k mark. I'm guessing we said to Walker, if you're only fit for 50-60% of he time, which his 2 n half seasons here have shown, then we need to renegotiate as we cant justify having a top earner missing that much time. Probably offered him £2k a week but shot up the appearance fee is my guess.

As you said in another post, we offered Davies a similar deal and he preferred the guaranteed salary elsewhere. Walker wont struggle for offers, I'm leaning towards him taking better money elsewhere. I know from a friend of a friend of Olivers that he turned down more money in L1 to come here, but it wasn't that much more and he wanted to live in Sheffield again. I reckon he is also up there on the top earners chart and likely one we try to move on.
