Happy 75th birthday to Graham Oates (number 5), the English midfielder who scored 32 goals in 272 appearances over 8 seasons with Bradford City (1969-74), Blackburn Rovers (1974-76) and Newcastle United (1976-78), then jumped to the NASL and added another 22 goals in 110 games with the Detroit Express (1978-80) and California Surf (1981).

Very good player for us, scored the winning goal against Chesterfield in 1971 that kept us up. Utility player who could play at the back, midfield or centre forward.

Pretty sure he was in the 1978 panini sticker album, my first, for Newcastle.

Indeed , they were spectacular. He was a bit of an artist too. Did a few portraits of his teammates and they were pretty good

Another Graham Oates goal I fondly recall from that season was an Easter away game against Preston North End. They were heading toward being the league champions and unbeaten at home all season. We were battling relegation. A Bruce Bannister cross nodded in by Oates gave us a 1-1 draw. Terrific stuff.

Someone has posted a team sheet on the Facebook site of Bantams past. Graham Oates is a substitute for Bradford PA reserves against City reserves in 1967. I never realised he was at Avenue at one time. Possibly a trialist.
