Great signing but as others have said it has to be backed up with more mobility/forward thinking behind him and getting the ball forward and into the box (with quality) quicker,

The brilliant individual goals away at Gillingham and Mansfield were outstanding but his bread and butter is getting on the end of corners, crosses and in the penalty area stuff.

Don’t think he’ll get near the numbers he did this season but a 15 to 20 league goal season is not out of the question.

What we can’t do is have another season where our second highest scorer has 6 and our third highest scorer didn’t play for us after January.

Great news to start the day off with

Andy Cook is proven to get goals in this division. One of the things I will applaud Hughes for is he's managed to get the best out of cook. Prior to this season, Cook was merely a goal poacher. Since Hughes came in last year, Cook's all round game has improved drastically. His ability to hold the ball up, bring others in to play an the variety of goals he's scored this season means he would of been a very hard man to replace had he gone elsewhere.

Yes, it is a 3 year contract, an preferably, it would of made sense for the club to limit the contract duration to 2, but in League Two, an even the leagues above, as long as a player maintains their fitness levels, they can easily play till their late 30s. Examples Such as Ian Henderson, Billy Sharp, Paddy Madden, Matt Smith have all done the business, even with age being against them

Hopefully we can push on now an sign some players to compliment Cook so he doesn't have to carry us again next season

    Boom! Get in.

Three years is a long contract for a 33 year old, but worst case scenario we have a very solid second choice striker for the last year of his contract. Not having goals on the bench cost us points this year.

I wonder how much Hughes' presence influenced Cook's decision? It's not talked about on this forum much, but Hughes and team can take a lot of credit for developing Cook so well last season.

Williams is much like Clayton in so much as he is usually spent after about 70 mins.We need someone younger/ fitter in my opinion.

    Ha ha I like it.

    Cooks on the gravy train.

Well done to him for getting himself a good deal.

I read that Klopp wanted Milner to stay but the club said no due to his age. Meanwhile at Bradford City the owner is clueless and Cook’s agent took full advantage of that.

We really shouldn’t be giving a 33 year old a 3 year deal then moan about sustainability.

Hypothetically, had we not offered Cook a 3 year contract, an he had chosen to go elsewhere. Who would of you suggested to replace him with?

Age is just a number. Players are slowing down at a much older age than they used too. This isnt the 90s anymore fella.

Hes just come off the back of a 30 goal season. It would be madness for him to leave brcause we couldnt muster up an appealing deal.

Milner is 37. Over 4 years older and Liverpool have money to invest in a replacement. You are a lunatic!!!

I understand where you are coming from.

However, I think we've more chance of getting out this division next season with Andy Cook than without. I see it as an investment, which carries risk like all investment, but at this point in time it appears to be sensible approach. We can reappraise the situation at the end of next season.

Great to see him sign. Peter Thorne was okay in his mid thirties. Rest of the signings need to be younger, with great mobility and pace though. A second/third striker with pace would be good.

Williams is more creative and gets in the box and scores goals he has bags of ability I think he would be ideal for this club

Is this the same Hughes who signed his replacement at the start of the season the same Hughes who dropped him when he had a dip in form (every striker has them) The same Hughes who didn't bring him any support and made him play a lone furrow up front which Cook hated
I will give him a modicum of credit when he freshens up the whole of the midfield with attacking younger players, players who can provide assists and a 10 goal (at least)striking partner
All a big part of the reason why we failed to get promotion last season
Am not convinced it will happen

Problem with Williams is he can't do 90, let alone 90 on a Tues and Sat when the run in picks up..... we already have Walker of that mould too. Having a side with two central attacking midfielders who struggle to stay fit probably isn't the best idea. We'd need to be rotating that area around pretty frequently.

This is great news, Cook has been fantastic and so deserves to be recognised this way. I would have been happy with 2 years but that's a minor quibble.
To score 30+ goals in a team with very little back up is a phenomenal effort, I have also felt some of Cooks lesser games and bad misses have been as a result of the enormous pressure on him to deliver as we've been getting so few goals from elsewhere.
But there's no point in this signing with the right signings round AC and to take some of the pressure off him. I am certain he will still deliver but we have share the load
After last weeks disappointment this is a good start to the summer ☀️

    I don't understand the point you're making?

Are you honestly saying they don't need any League One quality strikers?

In any event... COOK IS STAYING!

My thoughts exactly - there's nothing to suggest Cook is declining physically, or that he will suddenly go downhill.

I'm glad we aren't making the same mistakes we've made in the past with guys like Rory McArdle.

If the talented first choice player asks for 3 years instead of 2, we need to consider that instead of sending that player to the hills and struggling for a replacement.

In the past we were stupid; giving Cook 3 years is a no brainer.

    EXCELLENT news.
