we never got to Burnley that night we were amongst many Bradford City fans who couldn't get in, the attendance that night was 52,850, your correct Malcolm didn't play in the return. Burnley.jpg

Seeing some of those names takes me back. Does anyone remember John Reid having the newsagents next to the Thornbury bus depot? I can't remember exactly when it was, but I seem to think it was around 1970, then again I might be wrong.

I recall David Jackson and Bobby Webb were both part time. I'm sure George Stewart played in the cup games. Mitchell Downie was probably the first choice so, I guess, he must have been cup tied. David Boyle, nicknamed "Edgar", God knows why?

When I was very young my dad worked at Crofts, I don't know for how long but I do remember going up to the sports ground a couple of times. I think back in those days there was a football pitch and cricket pitch. Years later I played on the football pitch myself a couple of times, it was very run down by then.

Malcolm lived on Avondale road in Shipley after he retired. He was there from at least 1970 onwards.
He came down to Bradford when we had a few Scottish lads that came down together. Not sure who the others were? Think 3 Scots joined at the same time.
I grew up with his son Peter and his sister Alison (or bomber as she was known by Peter).
Sad end to Malcolm's life as Parkinson's took him in his early 60s . Lovely guy who was so quiet and a gent.

I think John Reid, John McCole, Malcolm Currie, Billy (?) Barnes and Willie Marshall all came down from Scotland in the same sort of era. All were good value.

Hi Dave. Being something of a dinosaur, I'm afraid I don't know how to respond properly to your message. Perhaps you would be able to send me an 'Idiot's Guide' on how to do it.

I was Alison's friend growing up as we were the same age and 20 doors apart. Remember Peter well. I thought he went to new Zealand?? Used to drink in the Branch n the Ringers. Is he still a joiner? His elder brother was a teacher if I remember rightly.
Jeezo, I feel old just thinking about those days!

Yes I worked at Crofts when they were taken over by "Renold Chains" an American company we knew then that was the beginning of the end.
Crofts were similar to English Electric taken over by Sir Arnold Weinstock and his GEC company, closing the employees leisure facilities and social club, again the beginning of the end, our top guys wanted to by the foundry from GEC but they turned the bid down and put a couple of hundred people our of work, foundry workers, pattern makers, and the plastics division who were on the same site as the foundry, but kept a couple of facilities open where B&Q is now as they were making motors etc for the government/military at the time.

Thanks for that Dave. It is great to be able to discuss things with someone who has the same length of support as I have. I may seem a bit dense, but this is the first time I have ever sent a private message to anyone and is a total novelty to me. It is strange but I can remember some of the players from 50 and 60 years ago better that those from 5 or 6 years ago. Cheers, David

He might have gone to new Zealand but initially he went to Australia for 12 months. The last I heard of him he returned to Australia again that was over 35 years ago
