Southgate is a clown. He criticised the players more after beating Iran 6-2 than he did after one of the worst performances of his tenure last night. He's more pleased with a clean sheet and draw than he is with scoring 6 and winning just because we conceded twice.

It was a hard watch for sure but like it or not it's all about getting through the group stage.

The same 'clown' who has reached the World Cup semi final and Euros final in the last 4 years.

Wasn't a great watch last night, too many players had an off night, but still don't get all the stick Southgate seems to be getting.

The first target is to get out of the group. Barring a miraculous 4 goal defeat to Wales, job done

Same way if MH gets us out of this league playing the current state of football. Priority for England is to qualify and do what it takes to try and win the WC. It was awful last night, but we’re set to qualify if we don’t get beaten 4-0, and judging on last nights performance, that’s not going to happen. If we do win the WC beating all in front of us with a ground out, scrappy 1-0 result each time, Southgate will be lauded as a tactical genius. I read a quote yesterday that England fans only have two songs: “it’s coming home” and “you’re getting sacked in the morning”.

I didn't see the game so can't comment on the quality of England's play. But Southgate likes to consider himself as a 'tournament' manager and his first priority is to come top of the the group and progress to the knock out phase even if that means not seeking to win every group game. With the US as a bit of an unknown and yet probably England's main threat, not losing to them was critical. He did exactly the same in the Euros against Scotland (which also finished 0-0) and any criticism of his approach was later forgotten!

I don’t rate Southgate at all. Yes, he’s reached a final and a Semi, but in both cases we had very favourable draws. The only result that came close to impressive was beating Germany, and that was on our own ground. The Croatia and Italy games were huge missed opportunities. He lacks bravery and belief, and that transmits to the side. Any manager who has a rare talent like Foden and doesn’t use him, isn’t fit for the role. The level of caution last night was ridiculous - it’s completely killed the momentum from an outstanding result against Iran; he massively over reacted to us conceding 2 goals, one of which was from a penalty that should never have been. The post above is right - he’ll be more satisfied with last nights performance than the Iran one. We’ll be straight out of the tournament as soon as we come up against anyone half decent. He’s done nothing in the game to suggest he’s a quality international manager and I’d say he’s only in the role because he’s the right face for England’s non-footballing agendas.

He reached the semi final in Russia, losing three times against the only good sides we came up against (Belgium x2, Croatia). It was then his deficiencies as a manager that lost us the game as he sat on a one goal lead and failed to react until Croatia finally made their dominance count.

Then another favourable draw got us to the final of a home tournament. We go one up early on again and once again he shuts up shop, gets tactically outsmarted by his opposite number and we lose the game.

He's a good man, but a terrible tactician. His misuse of Foden whilst Mount continues to stink the place out every time he put on an England shirt is a disgrace and it will be down to his refusal to play to this squad's strengths that will be his downfall.

    spot on.

if people thought 6-2 versus Iran was some instant panacea to what has gone on this summer, then you might have to think again. Can’t believe anyone thought USA would be a pushover, I agree that we were very disappointing, but a lot of it was down to the opposition, we always struggle against a high press in an important game, and what was even more frightening was how slow we were without the ball. All the Foden’s in the world won’t change that. We lacked movement and ideas when we had the ball, but as soon as we lost it, their lads were sharp, moved quick and had acres of space. Just glad a combination of them lacking a top striker and the woodwork saved the day for us.

we should go through, but the USA display should show our opponents what they have to do. It was startling that probably Maguire was the MOM for us, if we had to have one. My guess is we might get a laboured draw versus Wales, though I’m not sure even a narrow defeat would surprise me that much.

all that said, I still am behind Southgate, to my mind he deserves a crack at this, though I’m sure once we are out, that’ll be it.

The highlight for me was seeing the Bradford City flag on display .
The fans who flew it must have felt as though they were back at Valley Parade, watching Platt and Critchlow passing to each other.

Those of us who were around in 1966 still remember that boring 0-0 against Uruguay. So keep the faith!

    @Fools Gold@Fools Gold I think
Even the '66 wins against France & Mexico weren't great

Once we're past the group stage it becomes a different ball game let's hope we step up.

Yep, you got the feeling that the USA game was set up to avoid a possible defeat. No point playing for the draw in the knock out stages.
