Bradford City recorded their first win over Harrogate Town on October 1, ending a run of 4 straight defeats since the clubs first met in October 2020. A first half Andy Cook penalty was cancelled out by Jaheim Headley shortly after the break, only for loanee winger Tyreik Wright to score his second goal in as many games to earn City all 3 points.

Harrogate Town still hold the advantage over their Yorkshire rivals, however, but with the two clubs set to meet for the fourth time in 2022 alone, Mark Hughes' men will look to close the gap even further, with another league game later in the season still to play.

    Harrogate Town 2022/23:

It's been a miserable season to date for Harrogate Town, the League Two minnows having recorded just 4 wins in all competitions so far. A thumping 3-0 opening day win over Swindon Town must have had The Sulphurites fans anticipating a more successful run than they subsequently endured: 12 defeats from the next 19 games in all competitions have seen Harrogate Town slump to 21st in the League Two table, together with being eliminated from both the League Cup and Football League Trophy in the first round.

Simon Weaver's men, then, will be looking for at least a taste of success in the FA Cup this season, if only to distract from their woes in other competitions. Unfortunately for Harrogate Town, they have already tasted defeat to Bradford City this season, their first ever head-to-head defeat – and on home soil, no less.

The EnviroVent Stadium has been kinder to Harrogate Town than their away games this season; and a recent run of two wins and a draw at home was cause for some optimism in mid-October – however back-to-back away defeats at Walsall and AFC Wimbledon mean that Harrogate have now lost 7 of their 9 away league fixtures this season.

More positively for Harrogate Town is the fact they have at least scored in all of their fixtures dating back to the 2-1 defeat against Bradford City, a streak now accounting for 8 games in a row. Former Bradford City loanee Matthew Daly has scored in 3 successive games, making him the club's top scorer with 5 total goals. Alex Pattison follows with 4 goals, while Jack Muldoon has 2.

Continuing to supply Daly will be pivotal for this weekend's away side, as the winger recaptures the form he displayed at Hartlepool United last season, before making the largely unsuccessful switch to Valley Parade in January. He will be keen to show his former suitors what they're missing on Saturday, as will Rory McArdle, who scored the second in the 3-2 defeat against AFC Wimbledon.

    Bradford City 2022/23:

Bradford City's form has petered out somewhat of late, with 3 consecutive draws and a crushing 4-0 defeat against Burton Albion in the Football League Trophy. Combined with a 2-2 draw against Leicester City U21's in the same competition, Mark Hughes' men have now won just 1 game in their last 7 fixtures in all competitions.

Goals have become an issue for City during this poor run of form, netting just 3 goals in the last 6 games. Wingers Tyreik Wright and Dion Pereira have helped themselves to 1 goal apiece, while Andy Cook netted the other – the winner in a 1-0 victory at Salford City.

Still, the optimism has not entirely evaporated from the Bradford City camp. The Bantams remain 6th in the League Two table, with a very positive goal difference of +8 and a game in hand over the top 3, who sit 5 points above them. That could be reduced to just 2 should results go City's way.

Getting back to winning ways in the FA Cup must be an absolute priority, then, for Mark Hughes. Arresting the decline now will see recent results as little more than a mini-blip in form – extending it, however, will crank up the pressure on City's players, as well as the manager.

Frustrations surrounding the lack of opportunities for top scorer Andy Cook, as well as an increasingly consistent wastefulness in front of goal from City's other attacking players, have had a minority of Bradford City fans questioning the current system employed by Hughes – although cup games aside, City remain nightmarishly hard to beat. With Bradford City's defence the joint-second meanest in the league, the form of goalkeeper Harry Lewis, as well as the back four, remains beyond question – however, errors from the likes of Alex Gilliead and Brad Halliday in recent games have prevented City getting top marks.

City will approach the FA Cup game against Harrogate Town looking to bear their teeth. A cutting edge is the most glaringly obvious omission from recent performances, with the clinical 3-0 win over Stevenage now feeling like ancient history.

    Recent Highlights:

    Bradford City 1-1 Swindon Town

    Bradford City 1-1 Crawley Town

    AFC Wimbledon 3-2 Harrogate Town

    Walsall 3-1 Harrogate Town

    Outlook:

For those that have witnessed highlights of the goals scored against Harrogate Town in recent games (see above), a persistent feature seems to be a lack of pressure on the opposition. Poor marking and a lack of alertness have also contributed to both good quality and poor quality goals alike.

Bradford City will want more of that, as several players including Tyreik Wright and Harry Chapman excel when given time and space. A high press has been blamed by some Bradford City fans for the side's undoing in recent performances, but that appears to have been absent from Harrogate Town at critical moments.

Which players Mark Hughes decides to field will be crucial. Hughes has certainly taken cup games seriously this season, with the club beating the likes of Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as pushing Blackburn Rovers close in their League Cup second round fixture. Don't expect a substantially weakened side, although several players including Vadaine Oliver and Lee Angol will be desperate to get a start against Harrogate – and will be keen to get their name on the scoresheet as they look to push for a more regular starting berth.

Unfortunately for City, the second string have disappointed slightly with recent performances in the Football League Trophy, and this again could inform Hughes' selection. One thing is for certain: Bradford City fans will likely expect victory here, and will want the club to push on towards potentially more exciting ties.

Drawing a fellow League Two side certainly lacks the appeal of playing against non-league opposition, or indeed any of the bigger sides from League One; but it might not be the worst draw as the club look to remain in the hat ahead of the more lucrative third round.

    Odds:

    4/5: Bradford City
    12/5: Draw
    15/4: Harrogate Town

    Predicted Outcome (THE VOICE):

    Bradford City 3-1 Harrogate Town

The draw for the 1st round of the FA Cup is this Monday at 7pm.

    Who do we want?
A home game against a big team like Sheff Wed or the lowest ranking non league team?

A trip to Alvechurch or Needham Market would be interesting.

In terms of the lower leagues they are huge in comparison. Its all relative. And a club with those foundations would not look out of place in the Premier League.

City vs Wendy would be a superb Round 1 tie. That said prefer an easier route to Round 3 so someone from the 6th or 7th tier pelase.

Not sure because they're in league two they cant be classed as a big team IMO they will always be a big team, for the Papa John Trophy didn't they take most of the Midland Road side, they will fill it if we gave them enough tickets, that's of course if we drew then at Valley Parade.

I would prefer a none league side at Valley Parade. Teams like FC Halifax or York City. Perhaps one of those exotic teams like Coalville Town or Needham Market.

Over £40K prize money for a 1st round win,we want a lowly non league team at home. No doubt we’ll get Plymouth away.

Don't care , as long as we win. The £41000 prize money could come in handy around Jan time.
Although the Wendies or Derby at home with a 5 figure attendance as well as wining would be the cherry on top.
