    Biggest Margin of Victory:

    18 Sep 1965: Bradford City 1 – 7 Stockport County

Bradford City face opposition with a significantly superior set of historical results in Stockport County. Stockport County, ever since the two clubs first met in 1903, have held the upperhand not only in terms of results, but also winning streaks (longest is 5) and biggest margin of victory (7-1 being the outlier). That won't make for great reading for Bradford City fans, but might be considered less of an issue than previous games where Bradford City had never beaten Steve Evans, and had never beaten Harrogate Town. City, under Mark Hughes, were able to put an end to both of those damning statistics.

While Mark Hughes will not be able to redress the margin of Stockport's historical successes against Bradford City given the sheer scale of the gulf between the two sides, he will be hoping to build on the successes City have enjoyed in more recent decades.

Thanks to Stockport's relegation from the EFL, it has now been 11 years since the two clubs have met – but between 2004 and 2011, Bradford City won 3 of their last 6 encounters, losing just 1 time. Now, with Stockport County back in the football league, Bradford City will look to build on a series of results spanning League One and League Two. Slowly, but surely, City can close the gap.

    Stockport County 2022/23:

For pre-season title favourite Stockport County, this season has not gone to plan. Currently sitting 3 points above the relegation zone in 19th place, Stockport County have registered just 2 wins from their first 11 League Two fixtures. All the talk of the National League Premier champions securing back-to-back titles appears and being favourites with punters in July appears to have been overblown. For as well run as Stockport County have been in recent seasons, steadily growing and adding to their squad, the results so far have to be considered disappointing, as Dave Challinor's side struggle to adapt to League Two.

Of note, the two wins, both 1-0 home wins over Colchester United and AFC Wimbledon, were both deserved wins by most metrics. Stockport County enjoyed the majority of possession, more shots on goal, more shots on target, and more corners in both games (in fact against Colchester United, Stockport County had 73 % of possession and a 21-2 advantage in terms of shots on goal), but still only ran out narrow winners. Making the most of their dominance in games has been a major downfall for Stockport County all season, as despite their lowly league position, Stockport have enjoyed the majority of possession in 8 of their 11 league fixtures.

Failure to translate territorial dominance into results and shots on goal into goals scored has been a season-long issue. Despite frequently being the Stockport player with the most chances, Antoni Sarcevic has managed just 3 goals, although that total places him ahead of strikers Paddy Madden (2), Kyle Wootten (1), and former Bradford City winger Ollie Crankshaw (1). Midfielder Callum Camps (1) has also been wasteful at times, while defenders Fraser Horsfall (2) and Ryan Rydel (1) round out the list of goalscorers for County.

The low figures are bleak reading for a side that has managed at least 10 attempts on goal on 8 separate occasions.

Some measure of comfort for Stockport County will certainly be that their xG (expected goals scored) is significantly higher than their real terms output. With the 7th highest xG overall, and the 11th highest xG for any away team, ordinarily Stockport would be expected to be doing much better in terms of goals scored and results gained – particularly in conjunction with a reasonably good xGA (expected goals against). In both metrics, xG and xGA, Stockport County have performed better than Bradford City; but Mark Hughes is unlikely to care given the 12 point gap between the two sides, with Bradford City in 4th and Stockport in 19th.

    Bradford City 2022/23:

Bradford City's excellent run of form continued with a 2-1 win at Harrogate Town, marking the first time in the club's history that City recorded a win against their North Yorkshire neighbours. Bradford City have now avoided defeat in 6 successive league games, picking up an impressive 14 points from a possible 18. Momentum continues to be on Bradford City's side, with Andy Cook notching his ninth goal of the league campaign from the penalty spot.

The arrival of loanee winger Tyreik Wright has added even more firepower to the Bradford City front line, as the Republic of Ireland U21 international has now scored in back-to-back league starts – 2 goals from 2 starts in total. Perhaps ominously for City's rivals this season, Vadaine Oliver not only opened his account with a header in the 2-2 home draw against AFC Wimbledon, but followed it up with a goal against Leicester City U21's in the Football League Trophy. If he can continue his recent form, opposition defences will be hard pressed to deal with both red hot Andy Cook's form from the start, and with powerhouse Oliver coming off the bench also in the mood to score goals.

Scott Banks, Harry Chapman, Richie Smallwood and Jake Young are the other players that have chipped in with league goals, while Bradford City await their first League Two strike from a defender despite improving set piece delivery.

One cause for concern for Mark Hughes' side is that they have failed to register more attempts on goal than the opposition in any of their last 3 league fixtures. While City picked up 7 points from those 3 games, the number of chances afforded to the opposition is looking slightly worrisome – even Stevenage, who Bradford City defeated 3-0 at Valley Parade, enjoyed more shots on goal.

Hughes will be eager for his side to address those facts in spite of their good overall form.

    Recent Highlights:

    Bradford City 2-2 AFC Wimbledon

    Harrogate Town 1-2 Bradford City

    Northampton Town 2-1 Stockport County

    Stockport County 1-1 Walsall

    Outlook:

In terms of results, there's no question Bradford City are looking like much the better side at the moment. In terms of statistics, Stockport County are more than holding their own. This might indicate that Stockport County are underperforming, a trend that is likely to eventually come to an end, while Bradford City are equally overperforming, again, a trend that is unlikely to endure forever. Sharp bettors may risk to place a wager on a potential upset, although at the moment outcomes just do not support that narrative.

Stockport's wastefulness in front of goal is a massive cause for concern. The normally prolific Paddy Madden has not hit his stride this season, and Antoni Sarcevic will also feel he could have done better in front of goal despite being the club's top scorer.

On the other hand, the incredible form of frontman Andy Cook is a key part of the reason Bradford City sit 4th in the League Two table, and he kept things ticking over with a penalty last time out. He will no doubt look to score another from open play, however, having failed to score in such a manner in the past two games. As pointed out previously, the emergence of Tyreik Wright and Vadaine Oliver as additional goalscorers across multiple games is a frightening prospect for opponents – particularly given the varied nature of the strikes (headers, close range finishes, and efforts from the edge of the box). Can Stockport contain City's red hot front line, let alone the strength in depth?

It would certainly be against the form book if they can...

    Odds:

    7-5: Bradford City
    12-5: Draw
    19-10: Stockport County

    Predicted Outcome (THE VOICE):

    Bradford City 2-1 Stockport County

First thing, can we get the defeat incoming thread merged with this please.
Nearly 18k tickets sold according to the clubs media team this morning.
Maybe just over 19k come Saturday imo.
This match sees us over a quarter of the way through the season.
If we win, which I can see us doing, then that's 24 points at an average of 2 points a game.
We are averaging 1.75 goals per game in all competitions but our goals form has really kicked on in the last 8, averaging 2 a match.
Unless Stockport come and shut up shop then that trend will surely continue as we are the highest chance creators in the league.
Stockport look like a team who like to attack but haven't turned possession in matches into many clear cut chances.
It might be another match like Walsall where we sit back and soak up some pressure then counter at pace.
Cook will be desperate to get back to scoring from open play, Banks faces a late fitness test, but the minutes in the week against Leicester for the 2nd string will have been beneficial so I see an influence from the bench again.
    3-1 City.

Well up for it can lead to being erratic and irrational.
Our calm heads in front of our usual home support.

Yes. I'm more optimistic about winning at Salford for the first time, as opposed to Saturday.

I don't think they've been outplayed all season - but do give goals away as happens when a team lacks confidence.

Anyone else go to that Stockport County away game where they ended up doing the double over us having only won 6 games all season conceeding 102 goals. They won 1 away game all season.

Infact by the time of the away game in Mid March, Stockport had won 3 games, 2 of them against us.

2001/02, they also did well against that season's champions, Manchester City, drawing away and beating them at home.

I think it is absolutely irrelevant how "up for it" Stockport will be...what counts is what Bradford City team turn up

Play the right system and to our strengths, against a team like County, and we know it'll be a walloping. Unfortunately our performances so far this season have been frustratingly laboured in periods, erratic and inconsistent at times...and still picked up good results which shows how utterly sh1te the league is! There for the taking

They rely on the long ball and 2 quick players up front while hoping that the opposition plays around with it at the back and can be pressured or caught with the ball

What isn't clear from the tweet, is the figure of 18,000 with or without the away supporters.

Stockport were allocated 2,753. If they sell over 2,000, which they appear to be on course to achieve, then we are on course for 20,000+ at Valley Parade.

That is some hell of an achievement for a fourth tier match.

Portsmouth had an average of 16,823 in 2016/17, but apparently the ground maximum capacity was 20,668.

If we get over 20,000 on Saturday, then I anticipate that this will be the highest ever attendance for a League Two game.

Our average so far this season is 17,192. Again a tremendous achievement.

Early goal followed by sitting back. That's guaranteed imo. It will then pan out in one of 3 ways...

They get no joy, become dispirited and we kill the game off.

They get back into with an equaliser, waste time and frustrate and go home with a point.

We concede, lose the plot and they score a late winner.

In summary I'm going for either a city win, a score draw or a County win.

    Hope that clears it up

Haven’t the club in the past included ticket sales from all sources. If that’s accurate then that would include County’s? Nevertheless, it’s still superb. I just hope the atmosphere comes across? These days it doesn’t seem to irrespective of TV or radio? I know you can’t beat being there but something has changed over the seasons media equipment?
