Good to know. For some reason I haven't been tempted to go yet. Not keen on the name, which is admittedly petty...

I'm a geek who likes the open kitchen thing. For a while they were the cheap seats but then some places got wise and started charging more for them! Feel a bit bad for the chefs who have to be on best behaviour though.

Back to the Moorcock for me this weekend.

It's named after the chef's daughter apparently. I think it just has a little way to go to live up to fine dining. No doubting the food is good and our waitress was excellent. Maybe they are just trying to be different. Interestingly the wine list was very small too, which again in my opinion is quite a good thing, provided that they are well chosen. From memory it had just 3 sparkling, 3 red, 3 white and 3 rose. Call me old fashioned but the wine was brought to the table already opened and then positioned carefully on the table so the label was facing me......and then that was it! No offer to taste (which tbh in these days of screw caps isn't really necessary for whites and roses) but it might have been nice to have had the first glass poured for us. No cooler or ice bucket offered until I asked for one. Like I say just little things.

Sounds a little rough around the edges.

I do like a short wine list too. Can't be arsed trawling through a tome for a drink.

Had another top meal at the Moorcock, just outside Sowerby Bridge, at the weekend.

Enjoyed a couple of pints (Magic Rock, £4.50) in the garden at the back before we ate.

All good, but the sirloin (one of those fancy old cows that put a 14 year shift in before being 'moved on') was a highlight. The crispy smokec potatoes remain superlative spuds.

I'm not a wine flight person but the bro-in-law I went with is, so we took their recommendations by the glass (with a bottle alongside just in case) and received healthy samples of several options. So that was nice.

Closes at the end of the year, and will be missed.

The Hinchliffe Arms in Cragg Vale, mentioned here in the past, has a new landlady and the food side of things looks excellent.

They've only been serving scran on weekends upto now but this might be extending as they settle in. The chef previously worked at St John in London - one of my faves.

There's an official launch over the next couple of weeks where food will be half price. Typically i've booked to go the week after.

Need to buy a wedding gift and thought a hotel stay with dinner and breakfast would be nice. Any recommendations for the Yorkshire area?

Depending on how much you wish to spend, the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey is supposed to be pretty decent.

Please don't choke when you see the prices though.

Shibden Mill Inn, quirky rooms, great food and some nice walks. Easy walk to Shibden Hall and Piece Hall a short drive. Great place to spend a night or two

Wetherspoons Hotel Ripon, nights stay evening meal and breakfast, plenty of beer and wine less than £100.

Loads of options but mindful of how pricey that package could be, (200ish DBB?) how about:

    Old Registry, Haworth
    White Horse & Griffin, Whitby
Fat Badger, York (formerly Lamb and Lion)
    Woodman at Thunderbridge (towards Kirkheaton)

We recently revisited the Station Inn at Ribblesdale. Good pub, basic rooms but has the #locationfactor and was about 120 b&b.

The Devonshire at Bolton Abbey also has a pub/smaller hotel called the Devonshire Fell.

    Loads more for mega-coin.

    PS: dinner?

You could consider the Tempest Arms https://tempestarms.co.uk/rooms/ nice pub, outside Skipton.

Or a bit left field, a ‘shepherds hut’ at the Craven Arms in Appletreewick one of the most beautiful parts of Wharfedale and a tremendous pub. http://www.craven-cruckbarn.co.uk/book-a-hut.html
