As marvelous a turn out from the Bratfud Massiv it was today, I must say that I was surprised when the club announced that it was an all time 4th division record...
A quick perusal of Wikipedia clearly reveals that the highest attendance at a fourth division match was actually 37,774 at Sellhurst Park to see Palace and Millwall.
    Am I missing something?

Me and my mate were certain we heard the tannoy announce that it was a LEAGUE record. We spent at least 2 pints worth of post-match back an forth attempting to get to the bottom of it. 'It can't be!'... 'What about back in the day when they used to come in droves?'... 'Surely not?!'....
It appears i MUST be missing something - My ears washing for a start!' haha
19,000 plus in the fourth division is a phenomenal achievement. Particularly with our recent history. If any supporter collective in the country deserves some good times then it's us lot without doubt.

My thought's on the game - Lewis looks very much the part. The defence, bearing in mind (same goes for the rest of the team) that they're still gelling, does instill me with much confidence. On the few occasions Doncaster managed to break through the lines it was dealt with quickly and with strength. Critchlow is a class above and looked like he could switch gear at any time. Made it look effortless which is the mark of a real player. Smallwood was cool and composed on the ball, exactly what I expected and it's clear that he will act as a standard bearer for those around him... damn shame he didn't put it in the back of the net with the chances that came to him.
I'd have liked us to have stretched Donny a little more than we did, though i reckon Osadabe's injury caused a lot of disruption in our intent. I like Walker and I'm glad he's on board, though I couldn't help thinking Vernam's trickery and vision would have come in handy today. I think that bringing the Luton boy back is now a must, to be honest.
I would not be impressed if I was a Doncaster fan, they turned up with a very negative attitude and had no intention of taking the game to us at any point. We know that this is something we need to get used to and I agree with some of the posts on here that we looked rather pedestrian in general and that much more urgency was needed in the final third. Too often a better final pass was needed and some of the swift interchanges and triangles in and around the box appeared to be lacking that polish. The lad's movement and understanding of each other is clearly not up to scratch yet, which is natural in a side playing competitive football together for the first time. Despite that, I sensed there was a strong sense of togetherness amongst the ranks, which was telling on the odd occasion which that extra 0.5% was squeezed out of a few tiring legs.
If pushed to raise a concern, then, and i'm sure most will agree, i did begin thinking about that thing that wins you football matches - Goals. Very, very early to pass judgement on the strikeforce, and with only 90 minutes to go by, I shall refrain from doing so. Whether it was supply, movement or general lack of opportunity/chance today however, we had absolutely no bite up front and I do hope that this aspect of our play is not allowed to fester. I appreciated Oliver's mobility for a big man, yet i couldn't help but think he was not being utilised in the correct spaces, or with the right supply. Again, however, early days.
In my opinion, on the whole, today was a positive. There is much to work on and improve, to look at and learn from, and apart from the injury I can't see any real worries that Hughes will garner from the day.
We absolutely owned Doncaster from start to finish, and it is such a shame we never managed to put them to the sword. I'm looking forrad to next Saturday and i'd have been glad of that mindset yesterday morning.

    CTID!!!!

I believe this has been clarified to mean that yesterday was a league two record attendance for valley parade - ie city’s highest league two ( fourth tier gate). Not an all time all clubs record for fourth tier game which is the palace millwall game

It was a fourth tier record at Valley parade. Sheffield Utd had a few crowds above 20,000 in 81/82 when they won fourth division title but the record is Crystal Palace who got over 37,000 in the 4th division in 1961

Absolutely fair points all round. It’s mighty difficult to break down a team that has no intention of doing anything other than putting 8-9 men in their own half and literally hoping for the best . That’s what they did, coupled with 10-15 “ serious, potential life threatening “ fake head injuries at every opportunity along with serious serious timewasting. The FA should watch the game back and use it as a means of teaching referees how NOT to apply the new initiatives. He added time on , something like 15 mins in total from memory, but as a “ consolation “ booked their keeper late on. That’s NOT how the initiative should work!

But going back to Doncaster…they may wish to play like that every game, that’s their choice, but as a fan or a neutral , would I likely go watch them? Would I hell!

In terms of us, it was a lack of seriously decent crosses in from wide . That’s where the normal outlet comes from when playing against a sea of bodies. We didn’t utilise it well enough .

I thought even when we were getting crosses in (which I agree were poor throughout) we seemed to lack numbers in the box.
No late runners picking up the second balls.
Touched on it elsewhere, we had all the possession but too little urgency and no threat until late second half

That was the season we lost the last game of the season and missed promotion on goal difference.
Huddersfield at home also had 23 or 24k against us that season.

Interestingly both Pompey and Huddersfield had crowds at that time almost equal to their time in the PL.

    20 October 1979 Portsmouth 4-1 Bradford City 4th Division Attendance 23,871
The away game at Huddersfield, that season, had an attendance of 14,875.

Two seasons later Sheffield United and Bradford City were promoted from the 4th Division (1st and 2nd respectively). When the teams drew 1-1 at Bramall Lane on 30 March 1982 the attendance was 24,593.

That’s not what they said at the ground (they have done in writing since), they said it was an English fourth tier record.
We were immediately talking how that wasn’t right

I did wonder if they meant it was a League 2 record not a 4th division record i.e. since the rebranding took place in 2004.

Yeah I wonder if the announcer just isn’t a genuine football person so either didn’t fully understand or just got the wording wrong.

I was at that game against Sheffield with the old man, is that the one where they smuggled a bantam/ chicken in and let it loose before kick off.

Yes the announcer said that but his words came out wrongly. I knew exactly what he meant at th3 time. The vital words he missed were “ club record”.
