It shows both - end of loan deal with us at the end of this month, and end of contract with Luton at the end of June. Seems like that's incorrect though.

Watt signed a 2 year deal after having limited league experience and Vernam signed an 18 month deal after we paid a substantial five figure fee. It does make you wonder why, in Vernams case, we didn't protect ourselves by putting the additional year in place given we paid a fee. Maybe the player wouldn't sign a contract with that in place, so had us over a barrel. As we know, the contract deals we're seeing now were rarely offered in the past. Maybe due to not having a specialist in recruitment at the club.

You dont need a specialist though. Its common sense. Why wouldnt a player want a longer contract? Guaranteed money!

2 years seems fair, with an option of a 3rd. Like you say, protects thr club and offers opportunities to the player.

I agree, but given the state of the club in the last few years you'd want to see how things were going before committing longer term or being forced to see out another year of chaos. With Hughes and the structure in place you'd be happy to give it a go. With Sellars and Trueman you'd think twice.

Burton were having a clear out as they were bottom of the league. Vernam had hardly started a game.
I'm not sure Vernam will have had too many options.
As I mentioned in previous post, the option of an extra year is something I've not seen us do before.
    Presume Hughes/Gent have introduced it.
We got stung with the player having the option with Donaldson and Zeli Ismail. McCall was stuck with them in 20/21.

It was between us and a return to Grimsby on loan it says in the paper when he signed, but were offering a better deal. To be fair, he started 11 of the 14 games in L1 he had at Burton, he was just very ineffective. Him and 3 others left when JFH came back to Burton, must just not have been his type of players, or just not up to scratch for L1 as all 4 went down the footballing pyramid.

I dont mind the extra year option on young talent, it's giving them to crocks like Ismail or blokes at the end like Donaldson that just seemed brainless at the time, and afterwards.

In one respects your right but there was a pandemic issue to consider ? Remember clubs had no gate income, TV income, no merchandising income whilst likely sponsors sat on their hands.
It would have been largely irresponsible to chuck around long contracts during a period when nobody knew how that utterly awful shitshow would last for ?

Sheff Wednesday have confirmed Saido Berahino, Chey Dunkley and Sam Hutchinson will all leave the club when their contracts expire this summer.

Berahino worked under MH before, had a pretty middling time in L1. I remember Dunkley looking like a colossus at the back when we were in L1. Any takers?

The option of a 3rd year is just that. An option. Its still a 2 year deal unless the club makes it a 3rd. So makes no differemce if you need to get off the books.

Do we want players who are released from a league one club, on decent wages and likely to be as ineffective should we go up? Or young hungry players who can grow with the club over the next 2, 3 or 4 years. No doubt we need some steady eddies but hopefully not the mercenaries wanting a big last payday.
