So how come he is nailed on for promotion with us when he has very little evidence of producing it

 

We don't need a manager who might get us to ninth or tenth place for a couple of seasons and then bugger off.

 

He’s only managed Rotherham and Mansfield in L2 in the period mentioned and spent other time higher up pyramid? Got Rotherham up and had Mansfield in playoffs?

There’s no way we are going up this season though. We need to stay up ! Our run of games in March is woeful, i don’t think we can afford to gamble with Fowler or an unproven boss now.

i assumed we’d beat Harrogate and maybe Oldham once Derek went and the shackles could have come off, but we are well and truly lost

 

Evans would get us in playoffs next season, if we can go up then finish midtable in L1 then great, if he goes we can build from there

 

Hi, Stags fan here with a cautionary tale.

We asked these same questions before signing Evans as manager. He was famously nasty and a convicted fraudster, but we took him on and true to form he conned us all.

He joined with the promise of success and talked up his 9 career promotions. In truth some of those were at non-league levels and he was counting ones where he'd left before the end of the season (we should have been warned by this). He's a very good self-publicist and he had our owners hook, line and sinker.

We did OK in the league after a slow start, although the football wasn't great to watch, and as we rose up into the playoffs, most fans were willing to overlook the constant shouting, swearing and complaining on the sidelines. Then Peterborough sacked their manager and suddenly Evans needed releasing from his contract for a dream job in China that our owner felt obliged to let him go for. Surprise surprise, it wasn't real and days later he turned up at Peterborough.

We dropped from 4th to 8th, missing out on the playoffs with egg on our faces. If you want to risk this kind of thing (he also ditched Crawley during a promotion push for a higher job I believe), as well as astronomical wages and a toxic dressing room, then good luck to you. He can't work without a big budget and has no morals or shame. The whole squad, to a man, will despise him for his bullying. He will drop players for months for single mistakes and try to shout them back into form. The only club I would wish him on is Chesterfield.

 

Pie in the sky. He'd split the club from top to bottom, promise much and deliver little and then walk away. See post #365.

I'm convinced only the wind-up merchants want Evans here.

He is a hated man up here and his recent record doesn't suggest we should be thinking of him anyhow.

Yes, things are going well under Clough and we're bringing a big away following on Saturday, but I'm taking nothing for granted. You were very good at Field Mill and Cook is guaranteed to score. In our last game at Newport we were cruising and 1 up when our 2 CBs started a brawl out of nothing. 1 sent off, 1 booked, both suspended for Saturday.

We play good attacking football, but I worry now that Cook will bully James Perch or Elliot Hewitt at the back. Should be a good atmosphere though. Looking forward to it!

 

Rest assured, you can take 3 points for granted on Saturday. You'll probably get generous odds too. Could be a handy way of paying for your day.

They are not though are they. Only a simpleton judges everything on the black and white of yes/no RE promotion. Based on his performance versus expectation he did well at Rotherham, Leeds, Mansfield and Gills. His odious character came to the fore when he ditched Stags for Posh, as their fan usefully pointed out, yes, but the salient fact remains….. he had them in playoffs and they dropped when he left. We can only dream of being top seven.

fans can say anything about his character and behaviour - with good reason - but the continual pushing of this ‘he’s done nothing since 2014’ narrative by loads on here, Twitter and FB, is lazy, blinkered, nonsense.

It's not just about the black & white of promotion or not. Our club is in a terrible state. We need someone who can come in and calmly assess what needs doing to turn things around (as far as is possible with Rupp at the head). We don't need a one man wrecking ball who alienates players, fans, officials and other clubs for fun.
Whatever you say about exceeding expectations (as defined by whom?) the fact is that his last promotion was eight years ago and in the meantime he has left various clubs in acrimonious or dubious circumstances, and that's without considering his earlier sins and illegalities. If he were to get us promotion, well great. But the risk of him failing and leaving the club in even greater turmoil than it's already in is just too big a gamble to take.

 

Deep down everyone knows that this is what we would get but some are ready to risk and go against their gut feeling due to the desperate nature of our season.
We all need to stay strong and not give in.

 

And Evans IS NOT the man to come in and bring stability. He's a mercenary. Spot on.

 

He isnt coming. He has good credentials but so do others without the baggage. Richie Wellens, for example, won the League with Swindon. His philosophy is great football. He’s got a more recent promotion and he’s a man we can due plenty of due diligence on via Power and Jewell. Surely both know people at the club etc. achievement without Evans’ baggage.

 

Because he’s bloody desperate. Rocking up at games and professing his love for a club he has zero idea about. He’s a bullshitter…simple.
