Yes, the numbers just aren't good. As I've said elsewhere, a promotion-winning side can afford one poor-to-average 10-match segment in a season, but two is pushing one's luck to breaking point. We've had two, and as it stands, the side is just not good enough to make up the losses.

Another way to look at it: at 1.33 points per match (61 total) we are currently ahead of the guaranteed safety (1.13 ppm / 52 pts) pace, but we are behind the Ronnie Brown comfort pace (1.5 ppm / 69 pts), and well behind the 100% playoffs (1.717 ppm / 79 pts) and 100% auto-promotion (1.978 ppm / 91 pts) paces. To get on to these paces we would need to, first, win 3, 7, or 15 matches in a row, and then, maintain said pace.

Granted, 3rd place is generally in the 80s but has been as low as 75, and 7th is generally in the 70s, but has been as low as 66. Thus the job at hand might be a wee bit easier...

(All that is for the 3pts for a win era, with seasons prorated to 46 games where needed.)

Walker seems a good start; a few more like him in, and the playoffs are not out of reach. Yet. The autos are, I fear. That gap really does seem too big.

I'm just trying to figure out why 6? I don't know where that numbers comes from?

Presumably if we only need 6, the other 5 are good enough?

Or do you just feel we have 6 specific weak positions?

You asked, "when was the last time we had back to back wins" I provided you with that information we actually had 3 wins on the run.
100 lines for Mr Ford, I must try harder !!.

I think my post suggests if more signing like Walker are signed then we will have good chance of a top 7 finish.

In a recent interview Adams was quoted that he hopes to bring 6/7 in during the January window.

Think we need a striker who is a bit more aware in the box Jon.
Too many crosses across the six yard box (or thereabouts), that are screaming to be tapped in are going wasted by not showing enough desire/heart/guts to get to the ball.
We seem to simply allow the ball to drift away with the attitude of "hell, I couldn't get to it"

Adding to that nobody ever makes a near post run, making things easier for the first defender

With two weeks to go. Can’t see it happening. But let’s hope so. A few going out of the club would be good too.

This is league 2 we are talking about here, not the championship. What exactly is promotion calibre anyway? Can you honestly, hand on heart, name one side you've seen us play this season whose starting 11 are promotion calibre? I'm betting you can't because sides like that simply don't exist in this league. Yes, FGR are running away with things at the moment, but is that because they are the best side in this league, or because they are cheating bar stewards? They certainly didn't look all that when we played them. The point is, the standard of this league is pretty poor overall, our downfall has been drawing too many games - a few more quality players in during this window to help turn those draws into wins and there is no reason why we can't use the remaining 22 games (practically half a season) to climb into promotion contention ourselves.

Especially at Corners McCardle used to be very clever at corners finding space we don’t score enough from them

We need to capture a winning formula and if we have truly identified the quality needed, then with good game management we will have a reasonable chance.

A well described post. Hope I have but expectations is low. Numbers, especially given your extensive research, paint a very telling picture

A repeat of what we did mid season last year would push us close. Based on the first half of the season unlikely but certainly not impossible and with two wins out of the last three it is a start

We had forgotten how to win but it can become a habit. Look at Blackburn in the Championship. A lot of their fans were calling for Mowbray out last season and they weren’t tearing up any trees then whooooosh, a hot run before Christmas and they are third, now only two points off top.

the poster who compared it to Bolton in this league last year is an even better comparison. When everyone is on board and united, you can put a good run together. Bolton were faring diabolically on KPIs but a good Jan transformed them. We are doing far better on KPIs so our starting base is better than theirs was (even with our glaring limitations).

i think back to the start of the season and we played all the teams at the top and not one of them, played us off the pitch.

we have been lacking in certain areas but this has never been a relegation team.

its a team that creates chances, but struggles to convert them. We also have a tendency to concede soft goals, but rarely are we rolled over.

Let’s see who else we can get in during the next two weeks…..

Teams have come back from worse at a similar stage of the season and even after, to then go on an get promoted. This season isn’t a right off just yet. We do need to bolster our ranks with a bit of quality. And a new right back. Anybody at this rate would be an improvement

In their paper over the weekend, they said they don't expect Charman to still be there by Feb.

Confirmed only one club has activated his release clause but the player turned them down, however they also said he's now believed to have had talks with multiple clubs.

We’ll just have to get them to add extra anchovies at Papa John’s, that’ll swing it.

All hinges if the fine margins swing I our favour. Even down to 10 men, Ash Hunter had a great chance to put the game to bed. We still are short of real quality in key ares namely the centre of the park and at the back. My own personal priority would be a central midfielder either to complement Watt or replace him. First half it was an area where we were second best. Only the sending off changed that.

Dead right Tallin - it's not just about signings in the window. There are at least half a dozen we need to offload - Robinson, Lavery, Kelleher, Evans, Threlkeld and Watt for me. But who'll sign em? Come on Sparks - get on the phone to Chesterfield and Stockport.

We should avoid any potential new signing that wants anchovies on their pizza - rather sign an ex con.
