It's not completely theoretical though - it's sitting in people banks but that means that anything that the normal downward pressure (scarcity of available cash) simply isn't there to balance it out. People are more accommodating of increasing prices because they're got extra money sat there that they would have spent.

As you say that will further cause issues when the supply chains finally free up.

As for Brexit - as I keep saying - look at the USA, same issues. 2 years of the government propping up an economy comes with ramifications.

    https://www.euronews.com/2021/10/29/eurozone-inflation-hits-13-year-high-amid-persistent-energy-crunch

By far the biggest inflationary issue is energy costs, followed by supply chain issues which are hitting all of Europe but are exacerbated here by the ending of paperless movement due to Brexit. And that will get worse now the regs have changed this month. And we also have labour shortages caused by Brexit on top of those issues causing wage inflation.

"The energy issues are very important. We see that about half of the inflation that we are currently experiencing in Europe is cause directly by higher energy prices through both fuel prices that have hit records and, of course, through the recent surge on gas prices as well," Bert Colijn, a senior economist at ING bank, told Euronews.
At the same time, we also see the prices from goods have started to rise as shortages of inputs and problems with containers globally have pushed up prices for producers which are now gradually being passed into consumers."

It's cost-push and supply side issues, not demand-pull, that's currently driving inflation here.

Yeah it's definitely just energy that's going up.

Fine. Like I say, just a coincidence that governmental measures which should result in inflation have preceeded it then. Very convenient.

It's not convenient, it's entirely logical. Such governmental measures sometimes result in inflation, but not necessarily so when they are being used to partially counteract a massive contraction in economic activity caused by a once in a lifetime global pandemic. In those circumstances the measures are simply minimising recession, not fueling inflation.

No one said it's just energy that's going up, but higher energy prices feed into every section of the economy, pushing up prices all over the place. Demand is well below normal levels, not above it. It's the supply/costs pressures that are the inflationary drivers now.

It seems naieve to me to focus on purely one side of the equation. Costs are going up but the 'demand' is accepting the increases. To me that's literally how inflation works.

If you want to look at it that only one side matters then I supoose that's fine too.

For the first time in my life, I'm watching PMQs. A perfect demonstration as to why this country is f*cked. A morally bankrupt PM, lacking in any sort of integrity and making desperate denials that offend anyone with a modicum of intellect.

And the prospect of his opposition leader being in place instead, is even more terrifying.

I fully agree, and that's my problem, I would love Boris out but there just is no one else within miles that could lead this broken party/government...

PMQs is driving me nuts. I feel like they've got bang to rights. They've got Johnson bang to rights but the opposition irritate me by exaggerating what happened - having a lack of control over the staff breaking the rules is would nail him completely.

Talking about "hosting boozy parties" IF he was just there for 25 minutes is needless. I feel like they let him off things that he has unquestionably done wrong by trying to make it even more scandalous.

Frankly, they're all a bunch of self serving, disconnected morons, motivated much more by their own interests than serving the public, behaving like children.

I am sickened by the dour, sour , Chief Mammy, and dictator of Scotland. Yesterday she decided to allow full football stadia in Scotland where 50% of the crowd will need to show " vaccine passport". So 25,000 of supporting SNP Glaswegians can freely attend a match without any restrictions.
As fully vaccinated 75 year old I am not allowed to attend a long awaited Scottish Chamber Orchestra concert in the company of a fully masked audience which could exceed slightly more than 500. The control freak, Sturgeon, will probably appear on TV next week and make another announcement opening something else.
It is time we were allowed to make our own judgements regarding the risks of catching the virus.

The mandatory vaccine for NHS staff which comes into place in April is expecting us to lose 80k staff.

This is seen as ok by the government, however at the very same time we are told the NHS is under stress due to a similar number being off short term due to isolation.

Another shitshow from the government on the horizion.

No chance they’ll go through with it regardless of how incompetent they are, they’ll hope to have scared a good number into doing as their told by then and hope infections have gone way down as we enter mid spring. Probably why they didn’t enforce it until Spring time.

Interesting Spain are now saying we should be moving into the endemic stage and are looking to categorise it with flu. No chance our government could enforce the mandatory vaccines of by April more countries have followed suit. Probably what they are hoping for to try save face.

Will be interesting to see if the Met do investigate the Bring Your Own Booze gathering if they can decide if Boris actually broke any laws.

Yep that is what I mean. Not even sure about rules as it all gets messy around public place, workplace, private garden, do the regulations apply to crown properties such as Downing Street. I think that is one of the reasons the Met have tried to keep out of it
