Talk about making my day, i have bee'n searching for this picture for about 40 years and hey presto you have posted it on here. Brilliant mate brilliant. now i have the exact date i might be able to get a copy from the T&A.

Jimmy Wheeler always found time to talk to us afterwards in the dressing room on tactics etc, and he seemed a really nice guy I recall, and had a lot of time for us kids.

 

Here's the picture I promised, the picture on the left shows better what I was trying to say with regards the row of terraced houses before they were demolished, I started watching in the late 50s and can remember the terrace houses, not sure what year they were demolished, maybe @Park bantam, @wetherbywhaler, @Kevin1954 or may be a fellow poster who lived around the Valley Parade area at the time.
In my original post I said I thought the GPO owned the building above but it says of the map at the time it was the drill hall for the "4 YORKS" who were the Army Reserve infantry unit, part of 4th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters North East - the famous 'Black Rats'. The Battalion recruits and trains out of nine Army Reserve Centres located in York, Hull, Beverley, Barnsley, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford and Middlesbrough.

 

No mate Charlie wasn't in the side in 1962 Arsenal FA Cup side be he was in the 1973 Arsenal FA Cup side that beat us 2 - 0, we stood amongst the Arsenal fans on the Clock End having a bit of banter saying squeaky voiced Bally was having a quite game no sooner had I said it Bally opened the scoring needless to say I got some squeaky voice replies, what a stadium Highbury was, marble halls with the clubs past great managers, Herbert Chapman and the likes, great day out apart from the result.

I can remember seeing a picture taken from the top of the new floodlights when they were installed in 1961 and the houses were gone then. I first went to City in 1958 but have no memory of those houses (more interested in getting in to the ground off Burlington Terrace)
