Scotland not extending the Covid Pass is a surprise, I guess they can no longer point to it's "success in Europe" as a means to justify it's use. So they have just kept it as it is as rolling back on it would admit it is a waste of time.

Yet the majority of patients with Covid in the ICUs are vaccinated? The latest data I saw said 65% in ICUs in England had had at least one dose.

The narrative doesn't fit unfortunately but it is the Guardian and they have to push this lefty bolllocks.

Are you sure that it's 65% of those in ICUs with Covid have had at least one dose? Or is it 65% in hospital with Covid have had at least one dose? I'd like to see a link to the figures you're quoting.

Also, there's a massive difference between having one dose and two doses, as far as protection from serious symptoms is concerned. One dose is not 'vaccinated', but only 'partially vaccinated'. Anyone who's had one dose and not bothered to get the second is nearly as stupid as those who don't get vaccinated at all, in my book.

Obviously, when 80% of the population is vaccinated, then the proportion of vaccinated people in hospital will be relatively high. But the vast majority of those in ICUs for Covid, but vaccinated, will be either extremely old, immunocompromised or with serious chronic health problems.

The point of the article is that there are far too many relatively young and otherwise healthy people in ICUs who shouldn't and wouldn't be there blocking beds and draining resources if they'd bothered to get jabbed like the vast majority of the population.

This article is written, not by a lefty Guardian journalist, but by a respiratory Consultant doctor who works in several hospitals. I'll take his or her first hand account of the situation as being more credible than your anti-vaxxer bollocks, thank you very much.

The Botswana Variant. Who had that on the sweepstake?

Seems part of the course, we were told the Brazilian and South African Variant were of extreme danger last year but they disappeared without trace due to our very own Kent Variant.

The timing is about right, and we know the media want to push for restrictions, so no doubt this story will run and run. Those scared witless will want us lockdown for our own good.

For once I do agree with the stopping flights etc to try and keep it out, just like other countries did to us when the Kent variant came out. Restrict that movement now whilst they check it out rather than delay and miss the boat again like we did with not locking India down

The virus was been developed as a weapon in China and escaped the Lab developing it, Designed to constantly change and resist treatment it will be with us for many years, The fear is that as it learns it will finally be untreatable

I have no problem with that either if it is a restriction that can be proven to make a difference. Like I have said all along doing things for the sake of it which make little to no difference I can't support. If this "Super Covid" is in the south of Africa then it makes sense to distance ourselves from it whilst we find out about it.

However isn't this is the issue, we are offering 3rd jabs to everyone and a variant seems to have emerged from a country where they aren't even giving out 1st jabs? I've argued that a relatively small % of people being unjabbed here is not going to be the cause of a new variant when billions worldwide still haven't had a 1st jab.

If the information is correct and this variant has the potential to evade immunity can we afford to take the risk.
It looks like the European stock markets are taking it seriously most are down well over 2%.

Banning the flights won't make any difference long term. As we've seen before all variants will get into all countries almost regardless of what you do.

It might delay things slightly though and there's no real downside to acting quickly to restrict transport from those countries.

The most important thing though I'd for the scientific community to get on top of it and make sure the vaccines can be tweaked.

A super duper nu one appears just as people have been kicking off on the streets in the past couple of weeks. How predictable.

But as yet it hasn't kicked off in the UK, as @Aaron Baker@Aaron Baker is saying it will get into the UK one way of another and if its as dangerous as reported it needs the scientific community to pull together.

    Yup
I've no problem with boosters etc, but it shouldn't be an either/or. The rich countries of the world are doing and spending far too little to help the less economically developed countries get protected. And, as well as being morally wrong, it's false economy. The sooner the world is fully vaccinated and poorer countries have access to their own secure production facilities, the sooner this thing will be overcome and normal worldwide economic activity can resume.
Just imagine what the £33 billion our set of public school winkers spaffed up their friends' wall on useless test and trace could have done if strategically applied towards getting vaccine production in Africa.

The thing is, we don't know how dangerous it is yet. It may be more transmissible, but less harmful, in which case it may not be much of a problem. But It makes sense to keep it at arm's length for as long as possible until more is known about it.

    Exactly.

There is anecdotal evidence that it is probably more transmissable, and its make up may reduce the effect of the vaccines, but the rest is pure conjecture at the moment.

The travel restrictions seem to be a sensible precaution, but as stated above, let the scientists do their work and determine just where we stand with this variant.

Viruses mutate all the time, it's very rare though for a virus to mutate to be more deadly and then take a hold in a population. The natural progression of virus mutations tend to be a greater transmission but less deadly.
