Hi, I’ve got a friend who’s written a book about being brought up in Bradford in the seventies and eighties. Although he was a city fan for a time- his real obsession became the superb England defender ‘Des Walker’ , almost bordering on the unhealthy if you ask me, my friend followed Des Walker and whichever club he was affiliated with at any given time.
The first city game I was ever taken to was at Odsal stadium on a cold evening in November 1986 and city ended up losing 5-0 to Nottingham Forest in the league cup. I was a young naive observer who cared more about how cold my fingers and toes were than anything else. I’ve done as best as I can to find the team sheet of that game to find out if Des was playing and not had any luck in finding out. I am curious if there are any fans out there that would know this ‘nerdish’ info? Thanks in advance, Stephen

Yes, Walker did play in that match. Here are the details:

Source: Tony Williams (ed.) The Football League Club Directory 1988

    19.11.1986
    League Cup 4th Round

    City (0) 0
    Forest (3) 5 Carr 30, Metgod 38, Clough 43, Mills 73, Fairclough 80

    ref. A. Seville

    att. 16009

Lineups: (apart from keepers, not in formation order)

City: Litchfield; Oliver, Withe, McCall, Evans, Hendrie, Ormondroyd, Abbott, Singleton, Ellis (Palin), Goodman

Forest: Segers; Butterworth, Williams, Metgod, Walker, Bowyer (Fairclough or Glover), Carr, Webb, Clough, Birtles (Glover or Fairclough), Mills

Williams doesn't give times of subs, nor who subbed whom if multiple subs for a side

We had just signed Palin from them a few matches prior.

Des Walker was a class act, a great player. At least your mate had a good role model ;)

Lol, I get what you’re saying but this seriously was for a friend, I was about 8 years old and pissed off that I had to stand to watch the game.
