Would you give him the time for a crack at a second season, or is 1 season enough to try get us up, given that promotion was the aim at the start of the season and that was clearly communicated to us.

Up until last nights defeat I didn't think Adams was the issue, I felt we had far deeper rooted problems within the club which were hampering us, however, with that being said, no matter what issues may be at board level behind the scenes, conceding 5 goals at home in 2 games to Bristol Rovers and Hartlepool is completely unacceptable and quite frankly at this rate there's no way we're going up.

The upcoming fixtures aren't very friendly to us either, with 5 of our next 6 opponents in the top 7. If we're not careful we could be in the bottom 6 going into December.

It's extremely worrying times for us. Regardless of what went on with recruitment, Adams still brought his own players in, and will have had some say in transfer dealings, even if 100% of the players weren't his, his public statements and management of the team have been unprofessional at best and I'm really not convinced by this man.

Fair enough, care to elaborate on why?

What have you seen so far with the way he manages us that suggests he can take City up?

(I'm not trying to play devil's advocate by the way - I'm genuinely interested to see other people's perspective)

Yes of course no problem. Every game baring 2 I have felt we were at least competitive, if not should have won. I’m a believer in the manager sets the team up to have more good opportunities than the opposition and the players have the responsibility to implement it on the pitch, only a couple of times has that been reversed so far. This with 15 of the squad last year that could have seen us relegated another year, big changes still need to be made, a lot of these players oversaw 2 6+ losing streaks in a season and have seen off a number of managers.

Adams is far from perfect he wouldn’t be managing in league 2 if he was, he makes questionable tactical decisions but so did Parky, especially in his first season when he was called Plonkinson for 30 games. Bits he’s been there and done it but never in his first season, that is evidence for me that given time he’s got a chance to get us up. Sack him bring who in? Will they get us up, or do we start everything again?

Regarding transfers they actually didn’t seem to start of to bad early summer, but they were terrible and desperate later on non of us know the full score what’s gone on there but at least changes have been made behind the scenes and I’d like to see that given a bit of time to bare fruit.

Finally it’s a gutt feeling, I had the same with Parkinson in his first season. It’s hard to explain but at this level I feel they both share that sort of stubborn steely grit that you need at this level unless you have owners with wads of cash like a Bolton. Simply put in more confident if Adams stays of a promotion next season than if he’s sacked and we’re looking around getting the likes of Campbell applying for the role or whoever is left that we haven’t tried.

All that said I don’t think he’s the one to take us past league 1, like Parky if he could get us top half league 1 and have a settled team and hopefully the club might attract some interest and be sold. From there hopefully develop an off field identity which probably wouldn’t involve Adams, a bit like Rahic tried but with people who are actually competent and push for the championship from there.

    Hope that makes sense.

Cheers, appreciate your input and perspective, interesting.

I always find it's good to hear others viewpoints rather than jumping to conclusions.

That being said, last night was the lowest point for me walking out of VP since pre-pandemic.

I do really hope he can turn this around but I've just got that all too familiar gut-wrenching feeling that we're on another road to nowhere. A glimpse of hope and then the same old outcome.

Absolutely. Sacking yet another manager isn't the magic solution that suddenly turns us around.

With the current owner of the club disinterested and budgets being lowered year on year only long term planning, and that includes retaining a manager, can give us any chance of that now.

I'd say yes. I don't know how promotion can be the aim/expectation when the budget doesn't look like a promotion budget. Adam's got Morecambe promoted on a small budget but that was in an odd season. Expecting him to repeat the same is a bad idea.

The squad is very poor. We recruited terribly and chose players that nobody else wanted. It is no coincidence our best player came from the division above and cost us something. Talent costs! I would be surprised if any of the players we recruited were even scouted. Instead of recruiting the obvious talent in the leagues, we look for the cheapest players available with the only requirement being they've kicked a football in the EFL before. We have a team of squad fillers and somehow the expectation is promotion. Canavan, Paudie (inconsistent), Cooke, Vernam, Ridehalgh (only going forward), and Sutton (messy sometimes but has tenacity and pace) are the only players I can look at and see them being part of a winning team. I haven't included Angol because he is injury prone. Crankshaw would have been included however the powers that be thought it'd be a good idea to sell a proper winger without a suitable replacement ready, when we run a system that requires wingers. So now we have the absolute joy of watching whatever Gillead (recruited from the highly talented, successful, and plundered Scunthorpe 20/21 side) is supposed to be, shooting every time he shouldn't, and passing/crossing to someone in a worse position when he could shoot instead. If the man was taking a penalty he'd lay it off for someone.

Anyway I have more faith in Adams than I do the players as I feel he has achieved far more and has shown proven ability. I don't know why those in charge felt it was such an important requirement to sign a manager with proven ability and success, and then turn around and sign any old dross that'll come through the door and expect it to work. Recruitment at the senior level has been shambolic for years and years and our only solution is to stand by crap players and sack the manager. 6 managers in 3 years.

I'll judge Adams when he has had ample time to bring in players WITH SUFFICIENT FUNDS MADE AVAILABLE, as he has now taken over recruitment.

To be fair though mate, Adams has brought in a fair amount of his own players as it is. Nobody has it 100% their own way, nobody gets the chance to build a complete squad from scratch, they have to be capable of managing some of the current resources to the best possible effect and having watched the past couple of games Derek Adams is struggling to do that.

It seems a lot of fans are sticking up for Adams but it was him mis-managing Crankshaw which saw him leave, it was Adams that brought in Songo'o and is playing him out of position (resulting in an own goal most recently), it's Adams that is publicly slating new signings, it's Adams that is making public allegations about problems behind the scenes.

There are a lot of alarm bells ringing. The problem with a lot of City fans, and perhaps football fans in general when it comes to their own club, is that they tend to dismiss any negativity and doubts through sheer love and hope that the thing they love (BCFC) will bring them joy - but when you start to analyse deeper and peel the layers all is not well.

I’d give him 2 seasons and then reevaluate. It’s glaringly obvious that we are missing a bit of quality, especially in the final third. If we are able to address that I think we would be competing for the top 3. Most games this season we have created enough chances and opportunities to win more games than we have.

I trust that Adams knows what is missing and what needs to be done (the change in the scouting/recruiting department shows this) so I think we need to give him the time to fix it. It was never going to be quick and easy given the years of decline.

At the minute, I would say yes. I was quite vocal that I didn't want Adams here but I've been pleasantly surprised by the style of play in the main, despite the results. There is some hope that with better players, that style can yield results.

But we have played some utterly crap teams so far and the next 5 or 6 are tough. If we're as poor in thise games as we were yesterday, then I may change my mind.

If he can get a full squad that he's happy with and trusts to do a job, I'd back him.

I think the excuses or reasons (whichever way you interpret it) is him stating he doesn't believe he has that yet.

Trust me, one or two who have replied to this thread backing Adams are far from the happy clapper types who dismiss negativity.

If Adams isn't pulling his weight they'd be the first to let the whole forum know.

Adams has a decent record at this level in the past 5 years. How many managers have we gone through - at some point the manager is not the issue its whats above him and the resources that are available to him.

No, stability with the right manager. Sacking McCall and then T&S was the correct decision. You don’t keep on with a bad plan just because of stability.

Adams is the right man. He needs to be backed to do his stuff, provided it’s not a house of cards that collapses when he does leave.

At some point we have to break the cycle and stick with a manager rather than pressing the eject button. We create enough chances to win 3 games but don't have the personnel to put the ball away. We have players here from last season (with the exception of Cook) who never scored on a regular basis for us or anywhere they've been. The biggest sin was not securing a goalscorer, for which all parties are to blame. Get that right in January (if possible) and we're suddenly a side that not only creates but finishes chances. That then takes the pressure off the whole team and the confidence we've seen on occasion is flowing throughout the squad. Adams has his faults, but like Parky he has a steely determination to get it right. There's no one I can think of that makes me think they'd do a better job given the tools we have. It's now upto Sparks and Rupp to give him want he wants and we need.

Without a doubt. We don't have the structure or ambition to get promoted, we have a mixture of inexperience and disinterest in the boardroom, so retaining a manager who's experienced will hopefully limit the risk of going down. Thats where we are now.

What? So the likes of Forest Green Rovers and Harrogate Town (the current top 2) who cream their pants when their attendances rise above 2,000 are clubs that are better tailored for promotion than us?

By making statements like "we don't have the structure or ambition to get promoted" you are basically implying that we are content with lurking in League Two oblivion - I'm not sure that's the case.

Our ST uptake will eventually start to dwindle even with cheaper prices, some people's interest will become irreversible, and we would miss out on a lot more financially by staying in League 2, when you consider the growth that would come with being in League One (extra TV money, extra crowds, extra interest, more merch sales, being able to increase ST uptake, matchday revenue, etc etc).

We need to get out of this league ASAP, at any cost. I'm not sure we have the time to give a manager 3 years in the hope he can change things around. Many managers at this level come in and make an immediate impact - I'm absolutely certain Derek Adams, who had the whole summer before the season started lets not forget, was expected to be doing much better than he currently is.

We have new seats, new dugouts, tarted up toilets and a plethora of new 'official partners' but a budget seeing a yearly decrease. All those that though we could do a Morecambe and get promoted with players on minimum wage, give your head a shake. All this negativity and toxicity could have been avoided if our owner was hell bent on promotion. Two or three quality signings and a £500,000 investment to the wage budget wouldn't be a guarantee of success, but it would push us to top three level. These next half dozen games are against so called better opposition, a good indication of just where the season will pan out will be after these games.
