The simple fact is that all clubs from the Premier down and deep into non-league all use extremely detailed match analysis statistics to help them forward in understanding where things are working and where they ain't. They spend alot of time, energy and money on them because in a game of fine margins, which football so often is, everyone is looking for the way to squeeze that extra 5 per cent or so out of their team that can mean the difference between a win a draw or a loss. xG is another very good measure in the tool box. It's simply telling you 'what is' in terms of attempts etc and from where. It's then up to good coaches and managers to extrapolate that, and work it to their best advantage in the future, with the players they have available and their skills - and a pointer to what type of player they may have to bring in to improve. I want that for City. Can't understand why some on here are decrying it as if 'there be monsters!'

Where have you seen the xG stats for today? Mayhew won’t have his put his timelines up.

the reason we fluffed our lines today is because our finishing is awful and we sat back, with a few tired bodies at the end, and invited pressure. Conceded several cheap free kicks on the edge of the box and had Paudie to thank for a great block before Pitman’s header did level matters.

Quite how you are dressing this up as the stats being bollocks I’ve no idea. Going into the game today xG would have suggested we were a much better team than Bristol Rovers and I don’t think anyone at the match would say otherwise after watching that.

we missed some real sitters, again, and should have had the game out of sight.

Our xG is 1.51 and we scored 2. So rounding it up as you can only score while numbers it was spot on…

But somehow this mythical xG is keeping your confidence up that we’ll turn it around.
    I don’t share your optimism

Stats are fine and our xg or whatever it’s called say we’re likely to score but we just don’t have goals in us. One up front and three attacking midfielders that don’t score. I’ll give you our score against Swindon it will be zero despite what xg says. The stats said we kept 2 clean sheets against Rochdale and Newport and they had few shots on target, however both teams missed 3 sitters each . Stats can be very misleading.

I dont have any optimism tonight.

my beef is that we don’t have the players to convert the chances we’ve created.

that feeling is more a general one over the course of the year rather than tonight, as we deserved to lose tonight.

theo robinson and caolan lavery were absolutely shocking signings. As bad as kai brunker, austin samuels on loan, kurtis guthrie. They are just bodies. Don’t offer anything.

if we are passing that off as a team that will fire us to promotion, we are in trouble.

Clear where our problems lie. Failure to invest in more clinical forwards in January will see us finish around where we are now.

Our failure to capitalise on our xG performance is frustrating. However, it paints a compelling picture as to how close we are to getting it right and what we'd reasonably expect if we add one quality striker. If Rupp doesn't back is by finding the money for a quality addition up top in January, he never will.
