'Jokes' which might offend

Think it was Rogered that said similar, there's not a right lot out there that can offend a white male. A privilege a lot of us enjoy.

 

Yes i have thanks. And yes, the black community uses the word on a daily basis. But apparently we must know it as the 'N' word. The word nigger is just a word until you add context to it. See, the word context seems to escape people these days and what we end up with is an incident of graffiti being written on Marcus Rashfords 'shrine' becomes a major racist incident with people actually bothering to read what was written.
Now, when the word nigger was used in blazing saddles, it was used for comedy effect in where the joke of the film was aimed predominantly at the white slave workers. I agree in a sense that people should understand wht the film is trying to portray. But i guarantee you now that if this film is shown now on the BBC it will be preceded by a warnignthat some may find this film upsetting. Wouldn't surprise me if they gave a number for counselling at the end for those affected by what they saw in the show. (Just for clarification the last bit is satire)

 

Surely someone calling a person who is shouting ridiculous outdated, sexist comments towards women, a prick, is completely justified?

I worked with a Sikh some years ago-great lad with a wicked sense of humour.

One day he came out with two one liners which cracked me up

They were:

And my other brother is a karaoke singer-Gerrupta Singh

Would these be classed as offensive/racist if I had said them to him?

Of course not. They are just a play on words based on names. Nothing offensive whatsoever about those jokes. Why would anyone think there is?

 

As with all things you can laugh at what ever you want, you can do what ever you want but sometimes doing things that you want have consequences. some people like to drive fast, but there are consequences. People used to drink and drive and it was acceptable but now it isn’t, again you can do but there are consequences

Blazing saddles is hilarious but if the jokes were written today the people who laugh at them would be admonished. Time doesn't stop them being actually funny even if the subjects are now taboo.

Whether things are funny and whether they're acceptable are too separate things. The joke that started this thread was neither however they're not always mutually exclusive.

Ricky Gervais said the cancel culture within the BBC 2021 would have put the sword into his Office script and it would have never seen the light of day.

Blatant racism, sexism, etc isn't acceptable. But we live in a society of absolute wet wipes and there doesn't seem to be any balance. I mean, you cant even discuss immigration without these loony, hysterical lefties screaming racism at you....

Are the jokes in Blazing Saddles now taboo? The jokes are actually on the white people. The whole thing is a satire on discrimination against black people.
"The man's a ni..." Is hilarious. "Stand back or the nigger gets it" (spoken by a black man pointing a gun at himself) is hilarious.
I don't see how these things are now taboo.

 

Love Thy Neighbour...Eddie Booth was the ignorant white racist and the joke was always on him. The person of colour (are we allowed to say black? I lose track) next door always got one up on him....

Really? A series i could watch again and again due to the genius that is Ricky Gervais. I love his general take on life.
