It's definitely received attention; but you could also argue out of the four defenders we've signed, only one has experience.

You could argue we've really 'developed' the development squad, but then the reality is, Riley at least is likely to feature alongside O'Connor.

Isherwood and Wood don't seem to be genuine first teamers, nor does that 6'5 striker from Barnsley, which is fine, there's time to get in the players that will make the difference.

I'd be slightly alarmed if we continued to sign defenders, though, even for the development squad. Creative players, whether out wide or in a Billy Clarke role, are absolutely vital; so is a quality centre forward.

 

Never saw him as that bad

He had two 'mares' as far as I can remember and it must be pretty hard to get form when you have an injury hit season

To be honest I'd take Clarke back tommorow, if it was the injury free version. We definitely need someone like him and so pace on one of the wings

Can't see McGowan and O'Connor as a cb pairing. O'Connor more likely to play defensive mid.

 

I hoped McCartan would be an improvement on Clarke, but he hasn't been so far. A mediocre athlete who is hard to shoe-horn into the team... for me, I'd try to move him on.

 

When are the "real" players coming?

 

McGowan is like a new signing . The defence has now got strength in depth.With Reeves back and the signing of Wright we probably just need one more midfield signing. If Seedorf has signed as reported we probably need another winger. As for strikers I think a lot depends who moves out

Yep, I definitely think we need to ship a few out, in various positions.

I don't think Wright/Dieng is anything other than an ordinary League One midfield, but if complimented by the right kinds of wingers/forwards, they can potentially do a job. Don't know a lot about Seedorf, but we need a winger who can make it happen - whatever mould he comes in, it needs to not be a Gilliead type who is more neat and tidy than creative or threatening.

Poleon MUST leave, surely, even if we turf him out on a season long loan. Accrington probably can't afford mega signings, he'd be perfect for them (please!)

I'm not sure I'd agree the defence has strength in depth. I'd agree that there are more options than last season and possibly better options. For me strength in depth is when you have reserves that can come in to take the place of someone and they can perform at the same level.

Riley, Wood and Isherwood may do that but at the moment there's not enough history to say with any degree of certainty that Wood can perform as well as say Warnock or say Meredith or that Isherwood could take the place of Killa or say McArdle. So that isn't proven strength in depth. It's pure speculation.

I will rephrase it’s is stronger than last season. As you say there are more options and also allegedly with an addition of pace

 

If the rumours are correct and we are trying to sign Matt Crooks he plays Centre half or defensive midfielder , so if he signs that's more cover if needed.
